The Donald Quarrie High School or “DQ’ as it is affectionately called is situated six (6) miles from downtown Kingston, east of the Harbour View Round-about on the St. The school was originally named Harbour View Secondary, but was renamed as a lifelong monument to honour Mr. Donald Quarrie after his brilliant performances in the 1974 Olympics – a fitting tribute to one of the sons of Harbour View

and indeed, Jamaica. Neville O. Peart – first Principal – and a staff of twenty-six (26) teachers, the school began operations on January 10, 1977 with an enrolment of seven hundred and forty-four (744) students of grades 7-9. It was a great challenge as furniture for most of the classrooms was not yet delivered however this provided an opportunity for the staff to be creative. Teachers and students were so eager to teach and learn that they sat on stones and used whatever resources were available to capture the lessons being taught. Those conditions did not last very long as furniture in the form of stools, desks and chairs were delivered within the month. As the new school year commenced in September 1977, the school got an influx of students from feeder schools such as Harbour View and Saint Benedict’s Primary, Bull Bay, Port Royal and Rennock Lodge All Age Schools.This led to one thousand two hundred and fifty (1250) students and so the school was placed on the shift system. The staff also grew to forty (45) with two Vice Principals.The school now catered to grades 7 – 10. The official opening ceremony of the school was held on May 16, 1978. The school was upgraded to a Comprehensive High in 1993 and a High School in the year 2000. The school is committed to establishing a tradition worthy of its patron, thus the motto: “Achievement Through Diligence”. To date the following principals have led the charge;

Mr. Neville Peart (1976 – 1994)

Mr. Stannard A. Williams (1994 – 2004)

Reford Hinds (2004 – 2013)

Mr.Talbert A. Weir (September 1, 2013 – present). Today, there are One Hundred and Fourteen (114) members of staff and One Thousand Four Hundred (1,400) students. Students are exposed to a number of clubs and societies that provide greater support to their holistic development such as music and environmental clubs. The school continues to take an active part in all aspects of Sports held under the auspices of the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA). It also has its Annual Athletics Programme in which six (6) Houses showcase their talents. The school continues to graduate students who are well-rounded and contribute to national development as well as foster social and scholastic experiences to the extended school family. The school boasts a motivated team that caters to the continued development of the institution and it is proud of having one of the most modern and state of the art computer labs and library support facilities that can be found anywhere in Jamaica courtesy of Jamaica Private Power. Stir Fry hitmaker, Ding D**g in the spirit of generosity, is using his status to make a difference in the lives of children who are now attending his almae matres.

In a social media update, the Ravers Clavers founder, shared that on Monday February 10, he visited Clan Carthy Primary and Donald Quarie High schools in Kingston, and donated five hundred thousand Jamaican dollars each, to both institutions.

Ding D**g’s post included images and videos of him and his team interacting with staff and students at both schools. His caption, while extending gratitude to his team and Friends of America, also attested to his blessings and the joy he felt in his ability to share his blessings with others.

Meanwhile, Ding D**g’s latest single Danca Bwoy, which delves into his musical journey, has been receiving heavy rotation on the airwaves and is now available on all streaming platforms.

Just hours before O’Neil Stevens, the principal of Jessie Ripoll Primary School in Kingston, and his wife, Camesha Lindsay-Stevens, tragically lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident on a South Carolina highway on Friday, he shared their final family photo from their vacation on social media – unaware that it would be their last together.
