Publicity over recent days has started to shine a bright light on the appalling situation in which unpaid carers in our Island community find themselves.

About time!

Carers Jersey is just that – about caring – for our unpaid carers. Who else does?

It is extremely disappointing that there is no established proven recognition or genuine acknowledgment of unpaid carers – they remain unseen members of our community, often suffering silently, either physically, mentally or financially, sometimes all three.

Unpaid carers don’t need to have someone looking into their situation – they need help! Now.

Carers Jersey demands the separation of the Pension Allowance and the Carers Allowance. It is discriminatory! Unpaid carers can find themselves in an impossible, untenable situation trying to navigate a complicated, unjoined up system whilst coping with the everyday stresses of caring for a loved one.

The Island needs to urgently establish a firm definition of an unpaid carer which is included in related legislation. This piece of work, to date, has not been undertaken despite suggested draft legislation having been provided to the Government of Jersey.

It has been been made clear already what the costs would be to the island if these carers stopped caring or became so ill they would be unable to care. The implications on the health service are vast. Prevention is not only preferable to cure but crucial.

We will, hopefully make some progress in the coming months.

MEMORANDUM: Dr. Margaret Bayes, MBE spent very many years of her life, indeed right up until her death earlier this year, raising awareness of such issues and battling for unpaid carers to be actively recognised and supported. On one hand, she would have been delighted that these matters have resurfaced, on the other distraught that nothing ha s been done earlier.

Recharger Day: October 2025

Around 70 unpaid carers of the Island’s community attended a day out away from their caring responsibilities, generously funded by Soroptimist International Jersey, to whom we are very grateful. They enjoyed socialising, activities, a delightful lunch and a singalong with a choir. The day ended with an incredible raffle and everyone left, grateful of a day out. Carers Jersey Government House Picnic Lunch

His Excellency and Lady Kyd, Patron of Carers Jersey, again hosted a wonderful picnic lunch for unpaid carers at Government House on Wednesday 18th June 2025. Around 100 people arrived to a refreshing welcome drink when they met His Excellency and Lady Kyd on an informal basis.

We were particularly delighted that Dr. Reginald Le Sueur attended. He spent a number of years caring for his wife, Dr. Margaret Bayes, M.B.E the Chairman of Carers Jersey for many years. He was also delighted to receive a special mention from Lady Kyd in her welcoming speech.

The welcome drinks and a wonderful lunch provided by Beresford Street Kitchen was then enjoyed and many of our unpaid carers commented on what a pleasant few hours they had spent.

A packed Radisson Blu Hotel today to launch Carers Week 2025. 'WHO CARES' hosted by Carers Jersey enjoyed a passionate key-note speech from Dr Karen Kyd, Patron Carers Jersey. We were delighted to see so many states members. Thank you to our stellar panelists Deputy Barbara Ward, Sean Pontin, CEO, Enable and Jo Dove, brilliantly representing Jersey's Young Carers of which there are thousands! We were thrilled a representative from Long Term Care was also present and keen to help famliies through this mine field. Face to face is always so much easier than a plethora of confusing emails and forms. Thank you!

Thank you to Joanne Newton, MD of Mind who not only masterminded the event but also gave a heartfelt tribute to Carers Jersey Founder Dr Margaret Bayes MBE who sadly passed away in April. The Carers Jersey team and it smany charity partners are determined to continue Margaret's work with the same tenacity to get Jersey a Carers Legislation. UK and other Crown Dependencies have this legislation Jersey desperately needs the government to deliver and we will lobby with the same level of tenacity as our Founder until this legislation is in place.
