Mental coaching for female and LGBTQ cyclists and endurance athletes Hi! I’m Pat Spencer. I am a licensed clinical social worker.
I am a therapist with my own private practice in central New Jersey. I work primarily with trauma and the LGBTQ community. I am an avid gravel cyclist, former long course triathlete, marathoner, and occasional open water swimmer. When I am not working you can find me lifting heavy stuff at the gym, exploring the roads in the north east USA or scuba diving somewhere in the world. Of course I also love some down time on the couch with my wife, our cats while watching college football or Jeopardy!.

Like many of you, I am shocked, stunned, and saddened by the events of the past several months—in the United States, in Venezuela, and now in Iran.
If you’re here for expert advice or a roadmap on how to “fix” the world, I suggest you close this page and look for someone more sage and wise than me. But, if you’re here for community and some shared, complicated thoughts and feelings, click the link in my bio

💯 recommend seeing with Alan Hunter and Mark Goodman from the early days of MTV. We had a great time last night at the State Theater in New Brunswick, NJ. The music and videos brought back childhood and teen years! Oh the irony of a room full of. 50 and 60 year olds singing “we’re not going to take it”….. at this point in our lives we are the ones giving it

Reliving my high school years tonight at an 80s show….trying to channel my inner Depeche Mode and Madonna’s Desperately Seeking Susan vibe…. And yes, everything came out of my closet…..for added fun Depeche Mode was the 1st concert I went to in 1990 at the Meadowlands

This flute is more than just metal and keys to me—it’s where I became a musician. It taught me how to collaborate, how to find my creativity, and most importantly, how to fail. It gave me the space to make a thousand mistakes, learn from them, and keep the music going anyway.
I’m excited to know it gets a new life. Even better, it’s going to an old friend and now band teacher. We marched together back at Holy Cross HS, and now he’s passing the gift of music on to his students in Linden, NJ.
I couldn’t ask for a better legacy for this instrument. Here’s to the next generation of music-makers!

Seeing all these 2016 throwbacks made me want to dig through the archives. 📂 Let’s go back to the years that actually shaped me: 1988 and 1989.
Looking at these, I can still feel the “chilly” breeze from those late-season football games and the pride of leading the band. It wasn’t just about the music; it was about the community, the neon, and the feeling that the world was wide open. 🌅

Every generation has THAT moment. The one that stands out in the collective memory of an entire era.
My grandparents had Pearl Harbor. My parents’ generation had the assassination of JFK. The generation younger than me had 9/11. And most recently, the world watched the tragedy of US government killing Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
Today marks the 40th anniversary of the shared memory of my generation: the Challenger explosion.
I remember sitting in class as the TV was wheeled in. We were so excited to watch a teacher go into space. Honestly? I’m sure the teachers were just happy for a break from the lesson plan, and we were definitely glad for a break from learning!
But a little over a minute after liftoff, everything changed. We watched the explosion in stunned silence. I still wonder what our teacher was thinking in that moment: “How am I supposed to explain this to these kids?”
While the world focused on Christa McAuliffe, I became fascinated with Judith Resnik. I wanted to learn everything about her—a woman who was a career astronaut and had dedicated her life to science.
Even though I didn’t end up in STEM, Judith taught me that women belonged in those rooms. She taught me that if you love what you do, you face the risks with your head held high. I wonder what the generations younger than me are going to lear from Alex Pretti??
Today, I honor her and the entire crew of the Challenger. 🚀✨
When feeling powerless seek power and agency where you can.

The dream team presenting United in Play at the ALICE Summit in Miami earlier this week. We are working to bring access to sports to ALL kids and to bring mental health awareness and skills to coaches. We had a former NFL player, a former high school athlete and social worker, a mom of a youth athlete and me, a mental health clinician.
