I’ve ALWAYS had my students create a Table of Contents for the “notes” section of their Writer’s Notebook. But, it can be tricky if kids miss a day or two of school and don’t realize they missed an entry. This year, I created a life-size Table of Contents to hang in our room so there is no excuse to not realize if your notebook has fallen behind. The perfect solution 😉
Musings from the Middle School
"Musings from the Middle School" is a blog about teaching ELA and math to middle schoolers.

Middle schoolers are funny.
Ask them to write a story and suddenly they’re “too cool” for school.
Ask them to create their own video game and they’ll spend 45 minutes debating whether a mushroom village should be located in the clouds or underground. 😂
That’s exactly why I love this project.
Students design an original video game from the ground up, developing characters, settings, conflicts, objectives, and storylines while practicing the same ELA skills we’d normally teach through more traditional assignments.
The result?
🎮 Students are engaged.
📝 Students are writing.
💡 Students are thinking creatively.
🙌 Teachers aren’t fighting for participation.
It’s one of my favorite projects for those weeks when everyone needs a little spark of excitement but you still want meaningful academic work happening.
And honestly? The games students create are often more creative than anything I could have imagined myself.
If you teach middle school ELA, this one is always a hit.

If your students are already talking about video games 24/7, you might as well make it an ELA assessment. 😏🎮
In my Video Game Project, students become game designers and create a proposal for their own original video game. They develop characters, settings, conflicts, mood, backstory, and plot while also completing narrative and expository writing tasks.
The best part? Engagement is THROUGH THE ROOF. Even those end-of-year kids who have mysteriously forgotten how school works suddenly have a million ideas and can’t wait to get started. 😂

Literary analysis became SO much easier in my classroom once I stopped treating it like a one-day writing assignment.
Now students begin preparing for their essays while we read.
Using BookChat Trackers, students collect evidence connected to possible essay topics all throughout the novel or nonfiction text. By the end, they already have organized evidence and ideas ready to go.
This year I used this process with:
📚 House Arrest
📚 All Thirteen
…and the difference in student confidence was huge.
I shared the entire process (including my gradual release approach!) on the blog today.

One of the biggest mistakes I used to make with literary analysis was expecting students to suddenly become independent writers overnight.
Now I use gradual release EVERY step of the way:
✔ mentor texts
✔ modeled trackers
✔ shared practice
✔ independent evidence collection
✔ model essays
✔ scaffolded thesis writing
By the time students write their final essays, they feel prepared instead of overwhelmed.
I shared the entire process I use with both fiction and nonfiction texts on the blog today!
