AITA For Moving My Emergency Fund Without Telling My Husband After He Promised His Brother Money?
I moved almost our entire emergency fund into an account my husband can't access because he promised $18,000 of it to his brother without asking me.
I’m 31F and my husband is 34M. We’ve been married five years. We both work, but I earn more, and I’ve been the one aggressively building our savings.
His younger brother recently lost his apartment after falling behind on rent. My husband told me he wanted to “help him get stable.” I agreed we could give him maybe $2,000.
Apparently my husband heard something completely different.
Three days ago, his brother thanked me at dinner for “saving his business.”
I had no idea what he meant.
Turns out my husband promised him $18,000 so he could pay debts and restart a failed landscaping business. Worse, he'd already told his parents the money was basically guaranteed.
I was furious.
My husband said he hadn't transferred anything yet, so technically he hadn't done anything wrong. He also reminded me that most of the emergency fund exists because we live primarily on his paycheck while saving mine.
That night, I transferred $27,000 into a new account under only my name.
I left $4,000 in our joint savings.
My husband discovered it yesterday and completely lost it. He says I financially betrayed him and that moving marital savings without permission is exactly what I was accusing him of planning to do.
His parents are furious because his brother apparently signed a lease for equipment believing our money was coming.
I admit moving everything was extreme, but I genuinely thought my husband might transfer it while I was sleeping.
Now he's demanding I return half immediately.
I refused.
AITA for secretly moving our emergency fund when my husband hadn't actually transferred the money yet?
