We have been so busy tutoring this summer that I have not posted. Lately, I have been thinking about the choices parents have to make when a school system refuses to identify dyslexia and or dysgraphia. If a parent can provide a tutor, then the school system can use that to still not identify and or provide appropriate services. The wait to fail still exists. What is a parent to do? Most parents can't afford to pay for weekly tutoring for years. Most students can't afford emotionally and academically to wait either because once you are in that hole it is very difficult for just the school system to dig you out. This is not a judgement but based on years of experience watching well intended school providers try. They don't provide the level of support or urgency required to get a child on grade level. The teachers need more support and real training and students need the 1 on 1 support that is intense. School systems do not have to provide either.

Parents will never have a chance to fight for FAPE if MSDE allows our school systems to "get away" with not really providing FAPE. Most parents can't afford lawyers and a State Complaint may be the only means to level the field. What is MSDE's definition of progress? It's NOT mine and not most people outside of the system. MSDE needs a rewrite. Anyone got a pen? I am happy that my client did get acknowledgment by the state for two of her three complaints against FCPS for violations. That will become public. I am going to appeal the third one.

Please email (See comments) FCPS is currently placing testing from an outside providers in the Parental Input section and not the Present Levels of Performance per skill area. Why does this matter? EDPlan IEP is difficult already to read for parents and moving assessment data to Parental Input does not organizationally make sense. It makes the IEP difficult for a parent to read and understand skills under each area. They would have to flip back and forth over multiple pages to compare and understand. The initial few pages are where the parental input is placed. The parent provided outside testing but that testing speaks to the present levels that the student is performing and in many cases supports changes to the IEP and or changing the present levels to be more appropriate. Putting it in the Parental Input section technically includes the data on the IEP however it takes the data out of context for the parents to understand and they will not be able to make the same connections as they would if it is all in one place. FCPS can still identify where the data was from source) within the Present Levels as they have always done. Why are they making this harder for parents?

So, middle school students reading 3 or more years below grade level for YEARS are being failed by the system in place by FCPS. This happened to my children and despite all the work, the mindset still needs to change. Rigor and intensity of support along with design needs to be defined again for FCPS. Do better! "It is not hurting them" can not be the mindset and low bar set in middle school.

Why use a screener and assessments if you don't believe in them FCPS! Today once again I was told the well below scores in DIBELS and low scores in iReady for comprehension really does not provide realistic data for comprehension but if the parent thinks there is an issue then they could try and do more testing. WHAAT!
