Nowadays the inspiration would come from the egg Sando at a kombini.

James Clavell, who was already a successful screenwriter for films like The Great Escape, reportedly found his career-defining inspiration in an unlikely place: his daughter’s schoolbook. He was struck by a single, simple sentence: "In 1600, an Englishman went to Japan and became a samurai." This spark of curiosity eventually grew into the 1,100-page epic Sh**un, which introduced millions of Western readers to feudal Japanese history.

Clavell spent years researching the real-life figure behind that sentence, a navigator named William Adams.

OIn actual history, Adams arrived in Japan aboard the Liefde, the sole survivor of a disastrous five-ship Dutch expedition.

Out of a crew of 110, only about 24 men were still alive when they drifted into the harbor at Kyushu, and most were too weak to stand. At this moment, Japan was a political powder keg, with various warlords vying for control after the death of the previous leader.

Adams was eventually brought before Tokugawa Ieyasu, the powerful daimyo who would soon become Sh**un. Ieyasu was fascinated by Adams’ knowledge of the world, shipbuilding, and mathematics, skills that were far more valuable than a typical soldier's.

What makes this story so compelling is the cultural and religious chess match that followed. The Portuguese had held a monopoly on Japanese trade and Christianity for decades, and they viewed this Protestant Englishman as a "heretic" and a pirate to be executed.

However, Ieyasu saw Adams as an intellectual asset and a way to break the Portuguese influence. He eventually granted Adams the status of hatamoto (a high-ranking samurai), complete with a fiefdom and the right to carry two swords.

Despite having a wife back in England, Adams was forbidden to leave Japan for years, eventually marrying a Japanese woman and becoming a key diplomatic advisor.
