Last week, the Addiction Science Lab was proud to accompany a group of students from the University of Trento’s Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science (DiPSCo) to the UK Parliament at Westminster, where they attended a high-level parliamentary discussion on Emerging Drugs in Sport and Society.
Organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Emerging Drugs and Online Behavioural Trends, the meeting brought together policymakers, scientists, anti-doping experts, and international organisations to address one of the fastest-evolving public health challenges: the emergence of novel substances and their impact on sport and society.
The event was chaired by Professor Ornella Corazza, founder and President of the APPG Secretariat and Director of the Addiction Science Lab, who opened the discussion with an overview of emerging doping substances and new behavioural trends. Contributions from experts representing WADA, UK Anti-Doping, the University of Hertfordshire, the University of Lincoln, and other leading institutions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in responding to these complex challenges.
For our students, the visit offered a unique opportunity to witness how scientific research informs parliamentary debate and public policy, while engaging directly with internationally recognised experts working at the intersection of addiction science, sport, and health.
Experiences like these are central to the Addiction Science Lab’s mission: training the next generation of researchers by connecting academic excellence with real-world policy and global collaboration.
