Scientists from the University concluded that exercise can be beneficial for both the physical and mental health of sufferers.
They came to their conclusion by placing more than 240 overweight diabetes sufferers into four sample groups, designating different exercise routines for three of them.
One group was given an aerobic exercise routine, one was given a resistance based routine, one was given a mixture of the two, whilst the final group were told to maintain their low levels of activity.
all three exercise groups showed signs of improvement in their overall wellbeing, whilst the sedentary group reported few improvements.
"Our findings have significant clinical implications and support recommendations for those with Type 2 diabetes to adopt exercise programs with combined aerobic and resistance training.
