There’s no place like Rome.
 
Growing up, as the child of first-generation Italian immigrants, I wanted nothing more than to be “Canadian”. I was desperate to have lunches that weren’t seen as foreign at school, to spend time with my friends, and to really embrace my Canadian identity.
 
My parents had other plans. They were determined to share their heritage with me and we spent long stretches of time in Italy over the summer breaks. It’s only this year, having gone back for the first time in 15 years, that I was truly able to appreciate the richness of Italian culture. I finally understood what they were trying to show me and embraced that part of my identity. I’ve always been proud of my roots, but it’s only this summer, as I soaked up the depth of Rome’s history, that Italy finally felt like home.

Today is The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. It’s important that we keep moving forward in the direction of LOVE and Equality for all Humans. Diversity makes the planet interesting. And we can all co-exist in peace if we agree to LIVE AND LET LIVE. This is the only thing we know for sure.
