🎓Not every applicant follows the same academic path.

If you are interested in our Master’s Degree in Classical Archaeology but do not fully meet the curricular requirements, you may still have the opportunity to strengthen your academic background through specific single courses before enrolment.

Each application is individually evaluated by the relevant Committee, which will assess your previous studies and, where necessary, indicate the most appropriate route to satisfy the admission requirements.

For many international students, this represents an important bridge between their previous degree and advanced studies in Classical Archaeology.

📚💯 Moving to a new academic system often means learning a new way of being assessed.

In Italy, university examinations are graded on a scale from 18 to 30, with 18 representing the minimum passing grade and 30 the highest standard mark. Exceptional performances may be recognised with 30 e lode (30 with honours). 🏆

Understanding how grades work can help international students approach examinations with greater confidence and clarity.

📝Exam season has begun!
At the Master’s Degree in Classical Archaeology, examinations are conducted orally and may be taken either in Rome or, where available, through accredited Unitelma Sapienza examination centres worldwide via videoconference.
As you prepare for your exams, remember to make the most of the self-evaluation quizzes available within each course. Designed to support your learning journey, these quizzes help you assess your knowledge, identify areas for improvement, and revisit specific topics through direct links to the relevant course materials.

🪏🏺🔍 If you enjoyed following our Summer School in Ancient Sparta, discover the training activities offered within the MA Degree in Classical Archaeology at Sapienza University of Rome and Unitelma Sapienza.
The 2026 programme includes archaeological excavations, laboratory activities, archaeological drawing, digital documentation, AutoCAD applications, and field experiences in Italy and Greece.
Students are involved in practical archaeological activities designed to combine academic training with direct experience on-site.

🪏The third edition of the Summer School on Ancient Sparta, “Living Sparta: History, Archaeology, and the Legacy of Values”, directed by Professor Giorgio Piras and Professor Rita Sassu, has just concluded.

The initiative brought together students from different countries around the world to explore the history, archaeology, and institutions of ancient Sparta through an international and interdisciplinary educational programme.

This year’s edition was organised in a blended format, consisting of a first week of online lectures followed by a second week of on-site activities hosted by the University of the Peloponnese in Sparta.

The on-site programme combined seminars and guided visits to some of the most significant places connected with ancient Sparta and Laconia, including the Acropolis of Sparta, the sanctuary of Artemis Orthia, the Amyklaion, the Archaeological Museum of Sparta, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mystras.

We would like to thank all the students, lecturers, and collaborators who took part in this experience.

🔍 Day 5 of our Sparta week!

🏛️🏺Religion in Sparta was deeply intertwined with civic life and collective identity.
Sanctuaries such as Artemis Orthia, Athena Chalkioikos on the acropolis, the Amyklaion, and the Menelaion reflect different dimensions of Spartan religious practice, from education and ritual to the relationship between myth and landscape.
Hero cults played a central role in this system, linking memory, territory, and social cohesion.
Through these sacred spaces, religion emerges as a structuring element of Spartan society.

🔍 Day 4 of our Sparta week!

Women in Sparta occupied a position that differed significantly from that of other Greek poleis, both in terms of visibility and participation in social life.
They received physical training, could own and manage property, and took part in religious festivals and choral performances.
An exceptional case is that of Kyniska, the first woman to win at the Olympic Games, whose victories in the chariot race (396 and 392 BC) were commemorated by a monument at Olympia.
At the same time, much of what we know about Spartan women derives from external sources, contributing to a representation that is partly constructed and mediated.
Their role must therefore be understood within the broader framework of Spartan society and its ideological elaboration.

🔍 Day 3 of the Sparta week!

The agoge was the state-controlled educational system that shaped Spartan citizens from childhood to adulthood.
Beginning at the age of seven, boys were removed from the family environment and organised into age groups under strict supervision. Their training combined basic education with physical discipline and collective life.
As they grew older, instruction intensified, focusing on endurance, self-control, and military skills.
Rituals and competitions held at sanctuaries played a central role, marking the transition from youth to adulthood.
The agoge thus formed not only warriors, but disciplined members of a highly structured civic body.

🔍 Day 2 of our Sparta week!

🏛️Spartan society was structured around a clearly defined hierarchy and a distinctive political system, regarded as a model of eunomia (good order).
At its core were the Homoioi, full citizens who devoted their lives to military training and political participation, supported by the labour of the helots and the economic activities of the Perioikoi.
Sparta’s political system combined monarchy, oligarchy, and elements of collective decision-making. Alongside the dual kingship, key institutions included the Gerousia, the citizen assembly (Apella), and the ephors, who exercised significant control over civic life.
Together, these structures created a highly regulated system that shaped Spartan identity and influenced later political thought.
