It’s been nearly a year since I’ve posted on here; the drive to create content has lessened even more, and even this post feels a bit preposterous.
I’m proud of the bits I have put out into the world on this platform with the goal of supporting and empowering mental health. My life is shifting into an important new chapter, one that I have always promised myself I would be nothing but present for. With that in mind, I’m going to be deleting this app off of my phone in 2024. I’ve held onto it with the excuse that there are some artists and inspirations I truly love following, however those don’t outweigh what I give up to be on here: my time, energy, mental space and attention span, and sometimes my own mental health in using it as a distraction or buying into the capitalist/consumerist/materialist stuff that is so present on here.
I take my job as a counselor very seriously and part of the work to me is walking the walk along with my clients. For me right now this looks like re-aligning my behavior with my values, being present and mindful, and finding new ways to cope with discomfort, fear, boredom, or uncertainty. It’s embracing a new life transition and chapter fully with open arms. It’s wanting to give my time and attention to the things that really matter to me. It’s also being one less voice on this platform of so many voices, since I believe the most important one to listen to for answers is your own (and we often need the quiet to tune in to experience our powerful, innate felt-sense within ourselves to hear that).
I’m not deleting my page as I think there are still valuable resources here, and in order to not be too ‘all or nothing’ I can allow myself to look up the people I’ve really enjoyed following on the computer through my account, or use resources I’ve saved. And who knows, maybe someday it will feel worth it to share more resources or more of my story. But for now, this feels right. Wishing you all a wonderful & blessed new year, full of love (and flowers 💐, same thing right?) Your time is precious; how do you wish to spend it? ✨⏳

👋 I am taking March off from social media, so I will see you all when the bleeding hearts start poking through, followed by the crocuses 🌱

I hope you all have a blessed March. Embrace the coming of spring, growth, transformation, renewal, light, and life after death. ☀️

A letter to my current and future clients Pt. 3

Dear client,

You are brave.

You are brave in your vulnerability. You are brave in showing me your battle scars. You are brave for showing up. You are brave for facing the unknown and the known. You are brave for choosing to do the work. You are brave to keep climbing. You are brave when you fall. You are brave when you try again. You are brave to love yourself well. You are brave to know yourself well. You are brave to be your own safe space, your own home. You are brave to flourish and grow. You are brave to show your beauty and best self to the world. You are brave to show your worst self. You are brave to explore every part.

I hope that I am the mirror you can look into and see the warrior that you are.

Love,

Your counselor 🪴

In case you haven’t heard of this concept, or need a refresher, knowing your partner’s love language can greatly enhance your effective communication!

Dr. Gary Chapman wrote the book ‘The 5 Love Languages’ which outlines five general ways that romantic partners express and experience love.

These 5 ways are words of affirmation (“I love you, and I appreciate your sense of humor”), acts of service (making dinner for your partner after they’ve had a long day), physical touch (holding hands on a walk), quality time (no screens while enjoying a hobby), and gift giving (self explanatory).

To learn more about the five love languages and the details of what each can look like, you can visit 5lovelanguages.com, or read Dr. Chapman’s book.

🌸Some questions to ask yourself to explore you and your partner’s love languages:

What does my partner do that makes me feel loved and/or appreciated?

What has my partner done in the past that has meant a lot to me?

How do I often express my love for my partner?

When does my partner share that they feel loved or appreciated?

What have I done in the past that has meant a lot to my partner?

🌸Some extra tips to keep in mind:
🌹We can have more than one love language
🌹We can express love through one love language and receive or experience love through another
🌹Love languages apply to all types of relationships (children, family, romantic, friends)
🌹 Learning to speak your partner’s love language and vice versa will enhance your communication and positive feelings in your relationship

🌸You can also take the quiz to help you figure out what your primary love language may be (https://5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/love-language)

An important part of couples communication:

The relationship we have with ourselves affects all other relationships.

🌱 Some ideas for how we can connect to ourselves, so we can connect in a healthy way with others:

+ Take ‘Alone Time’: What do you like to do when you’re alone? What fills your cup? What feels like ‘you’?

+ Self Check-In’s: Make a specific time to check in with yourself every day. Some like to do this through journaling, meditation, or maybe using alone time on a walk or in the shower. Ask yourself How am I feeling (mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, etc)? What have I been thinking a lot about lately? If I feel a specific emotion, where do I feel that emotion in my body? What are my needs?

+ Be Still and Be Silent: With all of the ever present and ever ready distractions today, how can we possibly hear our own inner voice? Make time to use silence, and be still without music, your phone, the TV on in the background, etc., and listen to your inner voice 👂

+ Use Guided Journals or Workbooks To Explore Yourself: The Self Love Workbook for Women by Megan Logan MSW, LCSW, and The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook by Kristin Neff Ph.D. are two favorites. You can also google self exploration prompts and take your pick!

Connecting with and being in touch with ourselves is so vital for a healthy romantic (or any type of) relationship.

How do you like to connect to yourself?

Have you noticed the more you connect to and love yourself the easier it is to connect and love others?

My life for the last almost 3 years has looked like the second picture most of the time. Writing papers, reading textbooks and articles, putting together presentations, and doing research. (..And working 5 different jobs plus internship throughout this journey 😬) This is what people think of when they think of grad school: homework and lack of time- which is true! However this counseling graduate program at Mount Mary has been quite different. It forced me to examine myself; to reflect upon and discover my own biases and wounds, so that they won’t get in the way of being an unbiased helper for others. This program stretched me to uncomfortable, painful places, helped me overcome fears, and has aided in redefining who I am as a person, and discovering who I am as a clinician. It has very much been a coming home process. A rediscovering of myself (all the parts that make up my ‘self’), and my passion for helping and empowering others. I couldn’t have made it through without my fiancé, family, friends, colleagues, and professors, who have been there for every step and heartache of this journey, and have continually provided support, love, and understanding. They’ve all allowed me to prioritize this degree and escorted me to the finish line.

I officially have my Masters of Science in Counseling!!!
