Once again this year, our lab took part in the European Researchers’ Night with a stand dedicated to the fascinating world of plants and their extraordinary ability to adapt to the environment.

Through observations, fun facts, games and interactive activities, we showed visitors of all ages how plants perceive and respond to the stimuli and stresses around them, becoming true “Plant Detectives” for the evening. 🌱🔎

It was a great opportunity to bring research outside the lab, share what we do every day and, most of all, meet so many curious people passionate about science.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by! 💚

How do plants respond to one of the most challenging environmental factors in space: high-energy ionizing radiation?

In our latest study, published in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, we investigated for the first time how chia (Salvia hispanica L.) microgreens respond to seed irradiation with carbon and iron ions, representative components of galactic cosmic rays.

Our findings reveal unexpected, ion-specific responses that provide new insights into plant acclimation under space-relevant radiation conditions and highlight the potential of chia as a promising crop for future space agriculture.

🚀 New Publication Alert! 🌱

Thrilled to share the newly released New Phytologist viewpoint article: “Expanding frontiers: harnessing plant biology for space exploration and planetary sustainability.”

This collaborative work, born at ELGRA, brings together an exceptional group of researchers to explore how cutting-edge plant science can support humanity’s next big steps — from sustaining life beyond Earth to creating more resilient, sustainable systems here at home.

The paper highlights:
✨ How plants can enable long-duration space missions and extraterrestrial habitats
✨ Key technological and biological challenges in growing plants in extreme environments
✨ The potential of space agriculture to inspire innovations that improve planetary sustainability
✨ The importance of international, interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping the future of space biology

As we look toward a future where space exploration and Earth stewardship increasingly intersect, plant biology stands out as a powerful tool for shaping both worlds.
