Prof. Gian Michele Calvi, ERIES Principal Investigator, Vice-Chair of the ERIES-IW2026 workshop, President Emeritus of the Eucentre Foundation and lecturer at IUSS Pavia, reflects on what ERIES-IW2026 means for the European research community, situating the project within a nearly thirty-five-year trajectory of European support for shared access to large-scale experimental facilities, tracing its origins to the early 1990s.

Prof. Calvi highlights ERIES as a particularly successful example in terms of participation, noting that it was the first programme of its kind to include facilities beyond Europe, and points to the novelty of bringing earthquake engineering and wind engineering together within a single programme.

A notable passage of the interview also connects the project to the evolution of the Eurocodes: thirty-six years after the first European programme established to support research underpinning Eurocode 8, the new generation of Eurocodes is now a reality, a milestone he describes as the beginning of a new era for European structural codes.

ERIES: Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies was a project funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme, running from 2022 to 2026. It provided transnational access to experimental facilities for earthquake, wind and geotechnical engineering across 13 research infrastructures in Europe and Canada. A total of 69 user group projects were carried out, involving 518 researchers from 173 institutions across 55 countries, including 45 industry partners, and the resulting experimental data are openly available.

📚 What will you learn at the ROSE Advanced Master's?

The ROSE Advanced Master's is an advanced postgraduate programme designed for engineers and graduates interested in advancing their academic or professional path.

The programme strengthens theoretical foundations and develops advanced analytical and practical skills in earthquake engineering.

Students will develop expertise in the following key areas:

🔹 Seismic hazard and ground motion
🔹 Structural analysis and seismic design
🔹 Seismic assessment, protection and strengthening
🔹 Seismic risk and loss estimation.

A distinctive feature of the programme is its intensive modular teaching format: courses are delivered in sequence, without overlapping, allowing students to focus fully on one topic at a time and interact directly with internationally recognised professors and experts.

The learning experience is completed by an internship of approximately one month, offering valuable experience in a research or professional environment.

ASSISi (Anti-Seismic Systems International Society, Inc.) has announced that submissions are open for the ASSISi Global Design & Innovation Awards 2026.

The awards recognise excellence in seismic isolation and energy dissipation technologies, welcoming entries across new construction, retrofit projects, bridges, non-building structures, and research initiatives. Particular encouragement is given to submissions that combine innovative engineering approaches with respect for regional and vernacular construction traditions.

The submission deadline is 31 August 2026, with winners to be announced in October 2026.

Last year, the Eucentre Foundation, together with the University of Pavia and the IUSS University School, was among the winners of the 2025 ASSISi Global Design and Innovation Awards in the Research category.

ROSE Advanced Master’s in Earthquake Engineering: Applications Open in Mid-July

Applications will open in mid-July for the 2026/2027 edition of the ROSE Advanced Master’s in Earthquake Engineering, scheduled to commence in January 2027.

This intensive, one-year postgraduate programme is taught entirely in English and is dedicated to earthquake engineering and seismic risk reduction. Jointly offered by the University of Pavia and the University School for Advanced Studies IUSS Pavia, with the support of the Eucentre Foundation and the GEM Foundation, the curriculum comprises 60 ECTS and features 12 advanced courses delivered by prominent international experts, along with an internship at affiliated institutions.

To support outstanding talent, the Eucentre Foundation, the GEM Foundation, and other partner institutions are providing 8 full tuition-waiver scholarships (€7,500 each), awarded strictly on a merit-based ranking.

New ROSE Seminar: mark your agenda!

Earthquake early warning systems operate on razor-thin margins of time.
Fangqing Du (IUSS Pavia) examines the conceptual framework and technical feasibility of implementing such systems in Northeastern Italy, a region where seismic risk intersects with complex geology and infrastructure vulnerability.

The seminar traces the journey from theoretical promise to real-world deployment constraints, with direct implications for disaster risk reduction in the Alpine-Mediterranean transition zone. A critical examination for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working on earthquake risk mitigation.

A brief journey through the highlights of the Tenth Nigel Priestley Seminar (the Twenty-Fourth edition of the International ROSE Seminar), held in Pavia on 21–22 May 2026.

The event featured PhD thesis defences, research presentations, the keynote lecture by Prof. Paolo Franchin, the posthumous conferral of the Nigel Priestley Prize 2026 to Prof. Paolo Emilio Pinto, and the graduation ceremony of ROSE Master's and PhD students.
