ROSE School Pavia The ROSE School is an international hub for advanced study in earthquake engineering.

Master’s & PhD in Pavia with Fondazione Eucentre, Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia, Università degli studi di Pavia e GEM - Global Earthquake Model. The ROSE School is an international centre of excellence for postgraduate education and research in earthquake engineering and seismic risk reduction. It is jointly managed by the University of Pavia and IUSS Pavia, in close collaboration with the EUCENTRE Foundation. Located in Pavia, Italy, the School offers advanced training programmes with a strong scientific foundation and a focus on practical applications. Its flagship programmes are the Master’s in Earthquake Engineering, a 12-month course, and the PhD programme in Earthquake Engineering, both designed to equip students with the skills needed to design, assess and retrofit structures in seismic areas, as well as to perform seismic hazard evaluations for engineering projects. ROSE welcomes students from around the world, fostering a diverse and vibrant academic environment supported by state-of-the-art research and testing facilities.

From Troy to Ithaca: Sailing hazards and time-history considerations

Greek heroes left Troy in ruin and set sail for home. Averaged across more than a thousand black ships, loss of life on the return was in the order of 1 to 2 per cent. For those who sailed with Ulysses, only one man in six hundred survived. An aggregate summary would report the first figure and discard the second.

Prof. Dimitrios Vamvatsikos of the National Technical University of Athens starts from this contrast to discuss why the sequence of events a structure experiences matters for structures in seismic areas.

On 26 October 2026, from 2.00 to 3.00 pm, Prof. Halil Sezen of The Ohio State University, co-chair of the Housing subcommittee of EERI's Learning from Earthquakes programme, will deliver the ROSE lecture "Why Do Concrete Buildings Collapse during Earthquakes?" at Eucentre, via Ferrata 1, Pavia.

The lecture will examine the main factors behind the collapse of reinforced concrete buildings, with particular attention to insufficient reinforcement detailing and to the shear failure and gravity load collapse of columns. Prof. Sezen will present building failure examples from recent earthquakes, laboratory tests on columns and field experiments in which first-storey columns were removed from actual buildings on the Ohio State University campus.

Next week, on Monday, 21 September, the ROSE School presents "Risk Assessment and Loss Estimation", a six-credit course held by Paolo Bazzurro and Dimitrios Vamvatsikos. The programme integrates probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard analysis with catastrophe risk modelling for building portfolios, addressing applications across insurance, reinsurance, and capital markets. Participants will examine seismic risk assessment for individual structures and networks and conclude with contemporary methodologies for collapse risk and loss estimation applicable to both new design and existing building assessment. Essential training for earthquake engineers, risk professionals, and disaster risk finance specialists.

The course is included in the programme of MSc in Civil Engineering for Mitigation of Risk from Natural Hazards ROSE Curriculum and the ROSE Advanced Master's.
