Dear itch friends, I'm sorry for the long silence.
As Jo had messaged each of you personally, and worked with some of you, I’m sure you know him.
Jo is the founder of www.itch.me
The mastermind. The strategy. The compass. The vision. The heart. The soul. The spirit. Everything.
This is Jo shaving off his hair because shampooing was becoming tiring. At this time, Jo had wanted to edit this video, to share the situation with you. But he wasn’t able to.
This was shot on 23 May 2024. This was shot 7 days after first finding out about Jo's stomach cancer. This was shot 4 days after 'self-discharging' from the hospital.
We had to discharge. His doctor had put a feeding tube in Jo during endoscopy, without Jo’s consent. This left Jo with no choice except to be fed liquid nutrition, which – he and I already knew, and already told the doctor – would cause him extreme pain. He insisted on Jo going for chemotherapy. He refused to hear or discuss alternative options with Jo. He also “don’t understand why the liquid nutrition would cause you so much pain”.
To every doctor and nurse who later asked why Jo had discharged from the previous hospital, Jo would share the encounters. He would explain: “I’m not afraid of death. I’m only afraid I have no agency over my own body.”

He had been working tirelessly on itch with extraordinary passion—all the way through to when we first found out about his stomach cancer on 16 May 2024. Jo passed away, in less than a month, on 12 June 2024.
