One of the things I love most about Italy is that it’s never just about what you came for.
Today we set out in search of a very rare yellow Siena marble for our new bathroom. Finding someone who still works with this stone has become incredibly difficult, as it’s so fragile that very few artisans know how to cut it anymore.
We ended up spending nearly an hour with the gentleman who owns this tiny workshop. He opened his doors in 1960, and as Marco asked him about the marble, he slowly began sharing his life story.
He told us he’s one of the last craftsmen left who still works with this beautiful stone. When he retires, there will likely be no one left to carry on the tradition.
We talked about Italy, about craftsmanship, and about how difficult it has become to find young people willing to dedicate years to learning a trade. As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. “It makes my heart cry,” he said.
We left with more than a piece of marble.
We left with a story.
So one day, when you see the yellow Siena marble in our home, know that it isn’t just a countertop. It’s the work of a man who has devoted his life to preserving a disappearing craft.
That’s the Italy we fell in love with. ❤️🇮🇹
