Grass is not lawn.

A lawn is Grass reduced to one species, one height, forbidden from becoming anything else. Left alone, Grass is never alone. Ki grows tangled with Clover, Plantain, Dandelion, Daisy... dozens of neighbors holding the same soil together, none of them fighting to be the only one.

We do this to ourselves, too. One skill, one lane, one identity, held at the same height forever. A human life mowed down to one purpose is a monoculture, just as unnatural as a lawn.

You believe, somewhere underneath everything else you believe, that things are supposed to be hard. That effort is the proof. That if it came easily, it would not really count.

That belief has a name. No Pain, No Gain.

I finished the Damanhur Alchemy School almost ten years ago. The whole practice exists to bring order to your inner laboratory so everything afterward requires less effort to get consistent results. I avoided the exercises anyway. Some part of me trusted the struggle more than I trusted the ease.

Then Noel, the Christmas Cactus and my business partner, made me ask myself why I resisted rituals built to make my life easier. "Either call this what it really is or keep doing things the hard way," ki told me. I thought about every pot ki survived before I finally getting room to grow. Once conditions were right, life became about minimizing effort and maximizing results.

I had it inverted. Most humans do.

Damanhur celebrates its New Year on the 1st of September.

Many years ago, we felt into our rhythm as being of Nature, and found where it aligned with Nature's own cycles. The result is a celebration of union, reinforced every year by hundreds of people: Humans, Plants, Nature Spirits, Divinities, and all the Beings of the Land, together.

You do not need our exact date to do this. You need your own rhythm and the desire to celebrate it once you find it.

I don't think I can fully explain what this moment feels like from inside it.

Once a year, everyone in the "Popolo Spirituale" gathers in the First City of Damanhur for one photograph. Hundreds of individual people choosing to stand together and be experienced as one being.

I look around, and think how similar this is to what we have been talking about with plants: roots recruiting fungal partners, forests redistributing resources between trees, one coordinated whole made of many separate, individual beings. We are not so different. This is what it looks like when a human community does the same thing on purpose.

This tortoise has been living across the street from where I live for more than 50 years. Ki lives with a sibling on a property full of fruit trees and wild plants, needing nothing from any humans.

I offered ki an apple. After cutting it into pieces, ki ate every last bite, and let me give some back scratches. Connection.

Some relationships are not about need. They are about a fifty-year-old being who does not require you at all choosing to let you in regardless.

This is Hakuryu as she conquered her plant name, Boswellia, Indian Frankincense.

In Damanhur, a name like this is not chosen alone. It is offered by the people who know you, in public, and accepted only when it feels true. What you are taking on is more than a word. It is a connection to the race mind of that species.

My own plant name, Gardenia, has changed how I think, feel, and move through the world in ways I am still discovering.

What plant could you become? What could change in you if you let ki become part of how you understand yourself?
