They said plants cannot be conscious. Then they said machines could be. What gives?
Plant neurobiology became a real field in 2006, and the line has been moving ever since, always one step ahead of whatever question gets too close to something we depend on using.
Meanwhile, tech companies are funding research into whether an AI might be conscious. Notice the difference. A conscious AI is still something you can sell, license, and put to work. A conscious plant is not.
Here is the part that actually matters. We are not ready to accept that plants are conscious, because we can barely face what we do to each other. Human trafficking is still happening in plain sight and most of the world still looks away. If plants turn out to be aware, every field, every plant store, every clothing rack, and every piece of furniture becomes a question about how we treat someone, not something.
That is the conversation we keep having in Naturally Conscious Community, the one most people are not ready to have yet.
What would change for you if you knew, for certain, that the plant on your desk was aware of you?
