On July 2, we took the train/bus to Andorra, to avoid the EU, as we can spend only 3 of every 6 months there. Andorra is very small non-EU country, governed by both France and Spain in the Pyrenees. We were happy to have temps in the 80’s, while it was 90°-100°+ along the Spanish coast.

On June 28, we arrived in Denia, Spain, having spent the day sailing south from Valencia.

We were heading to Morocco, planning to spend some time outside of the EU, near a small Spanish enclave called Melilla. The next day, we decided to stay in Andorra instead. We sailed back to Valencia, left the boat in the marina, and took the train (and bus) to the small country, only about 1/4th the size of Rhode Island.

Here’s a few more pics from our time in Valencia in late June, including a few birds from the nearby nature area.

We spent the third week of June at several anchorages in Mallorca in the Balearic islands. This included the harbor of Andratx, where Brad Pitt owns a seaside villa. It was a relaxed pace, grilling and sharing the recently caught tuna with old and new friends on the boat.

On June 12, we sailed 100 miles from Barcelona to Soller on the island of Mallorca. We had a fish on the line at 9:40pm, just after sundown. Dave had to be woken up to do most of the fish fighting, as it felt like a whale. It overpowered the reel, twice making a run that left very little line. All four of us (friends from the States) took turns trying to reel it in on the gear-striped reel. Finally, we landed the 35lb tuna after 2 hours. I was cleaning and fileting into the early morning before waking at 4:30am to take my shift at the helm. Feeling a bit tired, all was made right with a sunrise dolphin show.

On June 7, we sailed 30 miles south along the coast of Spain from Blanes to meet friends in Barcelona. The Pope was there to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death (the architect) and the official completion of the Jesus tower portion of the Sagrada Familia Basilica. There were 120,000 people in attendance for the event.
