Did you know that the Marche region of Italy became its name from the Germans? 😏

The term “Marche” derives from the medieval Latin “marca”, which itself comes from a Germanic root meaning “border” or “frontier.” This reflects the region’s historical role as a border territory during the early Middle Ages.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire collapse, various Germanic peoples—especially the Lombards—controlled parts of Italy. They used the term “mark” (in German, Mark) for frontier zones that were strategically important and often militarized.

And of you want to learn German🇩🇪 or Italian🇮🇹, this is the best time to begin! 😉

The best reward for volunteering is not this beautiful mazzo di fiori / Blumentrauss (although I love it!), but the easyness and joyfulness my students express themselves in Italian after weeks of diligent studying. The first week they talked to eachother in English and at the end of the course they were chitchatting in italian in the break😉 I'm so proud of them and happy for this experience!

The Centro Internazionale Studenti Giorgio La Pira offers help ti International students sonthey not only learn Italian and study at the university bit find a community and a new home in Florence. It is a very nice and fruitful collaboration with teachers and volunteers so we grow together! ☺️
