At the dawn of the twentieth century, a revolution in color chemistry transformed the artist’s palette. Industrial innovation introduced hues of new purity, stability, and intensity. A new violet, new possibilities. Developed in 1859, cobalt violet expanded the palette of modern painting. Claude Monet later adopted it for works including his Water-Lilies.
Earth colors, reinvented through chemistry. Synthetic iron pigments such as Mars red and Mars yellow brought controlled, reproducible color to the modernist palette, giving familiar earthy tones a place in new experiments with form and expression.
Color as a way of thinking. Synthetic oxides expanded the materials available to artists of Klee’s generation. His experiments in color and shape brought philosophical curiosity to the study of perception, exploring how neighboring hues alter what we see.
Commercially introduced in 1814, synthetic emerald green brought striking intensity to the artist’s palette. Emerald green became part of Van Gogh’s palette during his Arles years, making it part of his expressive language of colour. Its brilliance, however, concealed a toxic ingredient: arsenic.
