A special guest in the laboratory this week. 🤍

We welcomed a dear friend of A. Gallo into the heart of our production, where she spent the day working side by side with our team and trying her hand at some of the many steps behind our handmade watercolors.

Our laboratory is a working production space, normally reserved for our team, so opening its doors to a friend and sharing the energy, craft and daily rhythm behind A. Gallo made this a particularly special occasion🎨

Sentier Des Ochres: Special Edition Sample is live!

We have been preparing something special. From the ochre-rich earth of the Luberon, to our studio in Italy.

Exquisite earths by Société des Ocres de France, the last active ochre quarry in Europe and transformed into pure pigment at a historic factory in Apt, these colors carry the warmth and unmistakable character of Provence.

Special edition sample has landed!

Grab your Sentier Des Ochres: Special Edition Sample, while our supplies last.

Drawn from the ochre-rich earth of the Luberon, these warm yellows, reds, and browns have shaped the landscape and visual identity of Provence for centuries.

The story of the Luberon’s ochre began 100 to 120 million years ago, when Provence lay beneath a shallow sea. As the waters retreated, iron-rich minerals stained ancient sands in brilliant yellows and deep reds.

Time and chemistry worked together to create something extraordinary. Over time, wind and rain sculpted them into the colorful cliffs and canyons seen today.

Everything changed in the late 18th century, when French industrialist Jean-Étienne Astier developed a method for separating valuable pigment particles from the surrounding sand. By washing, filtering, and refining the material, producers could create pigments of exceptional purity and consistency.

Artists flocked south in search of that light and color. Paul Cézanne repeatedly painted the landscapes of Provence, while Vincent van Gogh, working nearby in Arles and Saint-Rémy, embraced the region’s vivid yellows, golds, and fiery earth tones.

Luberon’s extraordinary landscape became a source of inspiration in its own right. The ochre cliffs, honey-colored villages, and luminous Mediterranean light created a palette unlike anywhere else in France.

From the ochre-rich earth of the Luberon to our studio in Italy…

We have been preparing something special by hand, in collaboration with Société des Ocres de France.

Exquisite earths from the last active ochre quarry in Europe and transformed into pure pigment at a historic factory in Apt, these colors carry the warmth and unmistakable character of Provence.

Ochres have long belonged to the natural palette of French painters—their golden yellows, earthy reds and warm browns echoing the sunlit landscapes of the South. For artists such as Paul Cézanne, the colors of his native Provence became an enduring source of inspiration.

Special edition sample arrives this Friday, August 7. ✨

Heat wave! It’s summertime in Italy.

Welcome back to the studio group who is returning from vacation. This week, our two teams will overlap in the Laboratorio to coordinate and work together. Then, the second group will head out next week on their summer holidays!

Here we are building an edition of our Naturale 24 palettes.

Making Iridescent pine and closing each of the 10ml tubes by hand.

Preparing a special order for one of our resellers. Carefully packaged, Plastic free. Did you know you can find us at SoHo Art Materials in New York, Gwartzmans in Toronto, Poggi In Rome, Jackson’s Art in London and Pelligrini’s in Milan?

Packaging our individual half pans. Each color comes with a color swatch card and A. Gallo sticker.

With our own vegetable paste we glue Fabriano watercolor paper together with a non-stick “carta lucida” to create the base for our hand-painted labels.

Each color painted by hand with a gradient. Every label unique, and made with exactly the color you can expect inside your watercolor pan.

Cleaning, handwriting each name and wrapping every pan by hand. We must be crazy!

A big batch of Dusty Sage. We love that you love this color!

This week at the lab ✨

Dusty Sage passing through the three-roll mill, fresh pans being poured, Color Wheel paper packs coming together, and labels painted one by one by hand.

It has been a busy week of making before the rhythm begins to slow for summer. In Italy, this is the season when many teams take a well-earned pausa, and ours will be doing the same in two groups so that the studio can continue running.

This weekend, the first group begins their holiday after months of careful work, color, and craftsmanship.

Buone vacanze to them — and to everyone beginning their summer break ☀️
