Such a pleasure to assist at sound healing today . What a gift to be able to learn, to play these instruments, to hold space for those who come to find refuge in the silk cocoons.
Markéta Foley: mindful living inspired by qigong and yoga
Sharing practices in the spirit of Daoist Flow: weaving somatics, qigong, yoga, and mindfulness. In 2010, I moved to Iceland.
Yoga found me over 20 years ago, as a freshly-graduated biochemical engineer. The teachings of Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health (USA) laid the foundations for my practice. My practice quieted to restorative and yin yoga and somatic meditation. I self-studied nutrition, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Having dipped in and out of teaching engineering in academia, I felt drawn to also s
Qigong students often comment that it seems like we are doing very little when we practice, yet the effects they feel on their wellbeing is profound. And yes, I feel that too and have come to understand it as the core principle of this energy practice. When I get out of my own way, releasing the tension created in my body by excessive effort, the body relaxes and I get to observe free and healthy flow of energy.
The practice becomes a bit like working with a river. I don’t need to do anything to make the river flow; it does that if its own accord. My “work” (the “gong” in Qigong) is first to observe and feel the river’s currents, experience them in my body and look for healthy harmony between myself and the currents.
This is also the philosophy I teach from: guiding students towards their own experience. Offering choices, so they can find for themselves where their harmony lies, where they feel relaxed, healthy and well.

Deep dive: online Summer Qigong course begins May 24th

To create more breathing room for myself as I continue to attend to our family's unexpected situation, I postponed the Summer Qigong course by two weeks. Perhaps it will serendipitously align better with some of your schedules too.... :)
I am looking forward to sharing these very simple and gentle, yet powerful practices and exploring how the heart responds when we create space for ourselves, for our breath. This situation I am navigating now is certainly teaching me about that.
I am offering the earlybird price on the course through the end of this week.

Unexpected situation came up in my family yesterday that I am tending to. As a result, there will be some disruption to my classes. I am taking it one day at a time, so for now I have cancelled Sunday classes (at Eden and the YouTube live). I’ll keep you posted and I thank you for your understanding. 🙏❤️

I finished crocheting this wrap about a month ago. I started it last fall, choosing the yarn and colours inspired by the fall season. I followed a pattern for the basic shape, but I let the colours and type of stitch unfold throughout the seasons, choosing with each row as the time came.
Now that it is finished, I see its relevance to the Fire Horse year: in the triangular shape, its centerline moving from red/orange (fire) to blue (water), stabilized by yellow (earth) along the way.
But letting go of intellectual analysis….
When I wear the wrap, I feel supported in my central axis, with water below and fire above, centered by earth. This alignment of the fire/water axis is something I need to tend to every day, as a way of balancing the consequences of living without a thyroid gland. Tucking myself into this cozy wrap, I feel myself naturally drift towards healthy fire/water alignment.
The yarn is 80/20 merino/silk by (bought at ), hand-dyed here in Iceland.

Evening Qigong: Gentle Cleanse By Markéta Foley
This movement is the last in the “Five Waves” practice I learned from . It harmonizes the whole cycle of the five phases (elements) and the functions of their associated organs. It allows fresh energy and nutrients to circulate freely from the organs to every cell in the body, bringing health and vitality to the whole system.
I’ll be offering this movement in my online Revive & Thrive class this Wednesday (April 29th), as a way to explore the function of the “organs” I refer to as circulation/pericardium and triple heater. While these do not map to what Western medicine recognises as organs, Chinese Medicine does include them in the 12 Zang Fu organ system.
We will experience the form first, then explore how activating our overall energy and energy specifically in the circulation/pericardium and triple heater organs and meridians can help us receive more benefit from it.
Join the class live or via recording. Link in bio.

Earth element is added to my series of 5-element wrist warmers.
While I am including these in my 5-element set, I find I also enjoy them for Qigong Healing work. The mixture of white and yellow connects me with full spectrum sunlight, which feels very supportive for healing. The tiny speckles of brown in the yarn remind me to release any grasping for perfection.
The yarn is 70/30 merino/silk from (purchased through ). The hand-dyed yarn is called “Chamomile”.
Would you like a pair of your own? I crochet them to order and ship anywhere. 😊
