Choices and dilemmas - Reproduction of classed and gendered power relations through parental practices
The defence takes place on June 3. at 1:00PM in the Banquet Hall in the Main Building of UI.

About the project:

This thesis aims to explore how power relations are reproduced through parental choices and practices in Iceland, with a focus on classed and gendered dimensions. The thesis can be viewed as two separate yet connected parts. In the first part, I ask how parental practices contribute to class reproduction in Iceland, with a focus on school and neighbourhood choices. In the second part, I ask how the “good and worthy” parent is defined, with a focus on gendered family life in pandemic times.

The NordForsk-funded project Mixed Classes and Pedagogical Solutions MAPS warmly welcomes you to an open online seminar on May 27, 2021 at 12.00-15.00 (EEST)!

In this final seminar of MAPS we discuss the research findings addressing questions of inclusive education and urban segregation in Finland, the Netherlands, and Iceland.

The opening words of the seminar will be given by the Minister of Education, Jussi Saramo. We will hear three keynote lectures and related academic commentaries as well as commentaries from stakeholders, the Trade Union of Education (OAJ) and the City of Helsinki.
