Correlative conjunctions: neither/nor, either/or, both/and, . . .
برای اتصال دو clause, phrase یا کلمه به هم، از عباراتی نظیر neither/nor، either/or، both/and و ... استفاده می کنیم. معمولا آن دو قسمت که قرار است به هم اتصال دهده شوند، از لحاظ طول و ساختار گرامری یکسان هستند. به مثالهای زیر دقت کنید:
either . . . or
We can either go to Greece or Spain for our holiday.
It’s my final offer – you can either take it or leave it.
both . . . and
Both rugby and football are popular in France.
Both English and Welsh are spoken in Wales.
not only . . . but also
Not only is he a professional footballer, but he’s also a successful businessman.
در این جمله دقت کنید که بعد از not only جای فعل و فاعل عوض می شود.
not . . . but
There are not two but three Baltic states: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
In sport, what counts is not the winning but the taking part.
(در مسابقات ورزشی، برنده شدن مهم نیست بلکه شرکت کردن مهم است)
neither . . . nor
Neither Norway nor Switzerland is in the European Union.
Marriage is neither heaven nor hell, it is simply purgatory. (Abraham Lincoln)

whether . . . or
Whether you love them or hate them, you have to admit that the Rolling Stones are very popular.
I’m totally confused – I don’t know whether I’m coming or going.
no sooner . . . than
No sooner had I finished watering the garden than it started raining.
(تازه کار آبیاری باغ تموم شده بود که یهو باران گرفت.)
توجه داشته باشید که بعد از no sooner هم جای فعل و فاعل عوض شده است.
چون این ساختار قدری ناآشناست، چند مثال دیگر هم ازآن می آوریم:
No sooner had he sat down than the phone rang.
(تازه نشسته بود که تلفن زنگ زد.)
No sooner had Jonny started surfing the Net than his mom arrived home.
(تازه جانی شروع کرده بود یه گشتی توی اینترنت بزنه که مامانش رسید خونه)
