Myth Buster: "If our SOPs are updated, we are audit ready."
❌ "Our SOPs are updated. We are audit ready."
I've heard this sentence in pre-audit meetings more times than I can count.
And every single time, I ask the same question back —
"Updated SOPs for whom? The document... or the person executing it?"
Silence usually follows.
Here's the uncomfortable truth I learned across 17 years in API and formulation manufacturing —
📄 Updated SOPs prove your document is current.
🧠 They don't prove your people understand it.
🗣️ They don't prove your team can explain it under pressure.
🏭 They don't prove your shop floor actually follows it.
I once walked into a facility where every SOP was revised, version-controlled, and beautifully formatted.
Then the investigator asked an operator —
"Show me how you perform this step."
The operator did it differently from what the SOP said.
Not because he was careless.
Because he was trained on the OLD version — verbally — and nobody followed up.
That single gap turned into a major observation.
Real audit readiness is FIVE layers deep — not one:
1️⃣ Document — Is the SOP current and approved?
2️⃣ Training — Does the person know it, or just sign it?
3️⃣ Ex*****on — Does the shop floor match the paper?
4️⃣ Communication — Can your team explain it confidently?
5️⃣ Evidence — Can you prove all of the above instantly?
Most teams stop at Layer 1.
Audit-ready teams master all five.
This is true whether you're facing FDA in the US, MHRA in the UK, ANVISA in Brazil, TGA in Australia, or PMDA in Japan.
Different regulators. Same five layers. Every time.
