BSc+ students selected for National Initiative on UG SCIENCE (NIUS),
BHABHA ATOMIC RESEARCH CENTRE, TIFR, MUMBAI
2 students from First Year BSc+ Program of Navrachana University, Vadodara, have been selected for the National Initiative on UG Science 2015. Ms. Ilavia Binyaz K and Ms. Pisharath Namita Ramachandran of BSc+ Program (Biochemistry) 2015-16, will attend the camp organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR), Mumbai from 2– 6 November 2015 at HBCSE,TIFR, Mumbai.
The NIUS, a major initiative of HBCSE (TIFR) was launched in the summer of 2004 with the objective of promoting undergraduate research. The need for nurture programmes for undergraduate students has been appreciated for quite some time now. The general feeling shared by most scientists is that unless something is done urgently to attract and nurture good undergraduate students, the scenario in the near future in the leading research institutions of the country may be dismal. Indeed, several leading institutions in the country (IISc, RRI, SINP, TIFR, JNCASR) have already taken steps to avert the problem and are offering summer programmes, student visitorships, etc, to motivate bright young students to research careers in sciences. It will be a major new national initiative on undergraduate science that focuses on early nurture of potential Indian scientists of the future.
This NIUS programme is designed to provide extensive nurture and guidance to undergraduate students in science and is organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR), Mumbai. This camp will be an exposure and enrichment camp in the various areas of Biology.
The intense academic inputs at Navrachana University have given the students the springboard to excel. Last year too, 2 students of the BSc+ Program were selected to participate in this Program. They were Chemistry Major students (Ms. Suryanata, Mr.Ravi Viradiya) while this year the Biochemistry students have bagged this achievement.
