☀️ Can Earth Escape the Sun’s Dying Embrace?
In about 5 billion years, our Sun will exhaust its core fuel and expand into a massive red giant. For a long time, scientists believed this would spell the absolute physical destruction of Earth. However, a new study published in Astronomy & Astrophysics suggests our planet might just make a lucky escape.
It all comes down to a cosmic tug-of-war:
🔹 Tidal Forces: As the Sun expands, its gravitational drag will try to pull nearby planets inward.
🔹 Mass Loss: However, as the aging Sun sheds its outer layers, its gravitational grip will weaken, allowing the planets’ orbits to naturally drift outward.
According to the latest models, while Mercury and Venus are destined to be engulfed, Earth and Mars might migrate just far enough to survive the expansion, eventually orbiting the remnants of a white dwarf.
But there’s a catch: physical survival does not mean salvation. Long before the Sun reaches its red-giant phase—in about 1 billion years—our aging star will become so hot and bright that Earth’s oceans will boil away, leaving behind a sterile, uninhabitable desert.
Even if our home physically survives the death of its star, life on Earth will be long gone before the final showdown.
