🛑 THE PROTEIN BAR “SCAM”: DON’T LET ONE WORD FOOL YOU
That bold “HIGH PROTEIN” claim can make a product appear healthier than it really is.
This is called the HEALTH HALO EFFECT—when one positive claim influences how we judge the entire product.
In a study involving 274 participants, simply calling a nutrition bar a “protein bar” increased its perceived healthfulness—even when sugar and calorie warnings were shown.
Does this mean every protein bar is unhealthy? No.
It means “high protein” alone does not make the entire product healthy.
🔬 LOOK BEYOND THE FRONT LABEL
A bar may provide protein while also containing considerable added sugar, saturated fat, sodium or calories.
The front is marketing. The nutrition and ingredient panels reveal the fuller picture.
🔬 MANY BARS ARE ULTRA-PROCESSED
Many commercial bars contain protein isolates, sweeteners, refined oils, emulsifiers and flavourings.
Higher consumption of ultra-processed foods has been associated with several adverse health outcomes. However, this evidence concerns overall dietary patterns—not an occasional protein bar—and not every processed food is nutritionally equal.
🔬 “NATURAL” SUGAR IS STILL SUGAR
Honey, jaggery, cane sugar, date syrup and brown rice syrup may sound healthier. But when added during manufacturing, they still contribute added or free sugars.
🔬 SUGAR ALCOHOLS MAY AFFECT YOUR GUT
Maltitol, sorbitol and xylitol are not completely absorbed. Larger quantities may cause gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort or diarrhoea in sensitive individuals.
🔬 MORE PROTEIN ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER
The adult protein RDA is approximately 0.8 g/kg/day, although needs vary with age, activity, pregnancy, training, illness and recovery.
Protein bars can be convenient for athletes, travellers, older adults and people struggling to meet their protein needs. For everyone else, they are optional—not essential.
