The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of s*xual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, such war crimes. Mukwege is the helper who has devoted his life to defending these victims. Murad is the witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others. Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time s*xual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.

The physician Mukwege has spent large parts of his adult life helping the victims of s*xual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since the Panzi Hospital was established in Bukavu in 2008, Mukwege and his staff have treated thousands of patients who have fallen victim to such assaults. Most of the abuses have been committed in the context of a long-lasting civil war that has cost the lives of more than six million Congolese.

Mukwege is the foremost, most unifying symbol, both nationally and internationally, of the struggle to end s*xual violence in war and armed conflicts. His basic principle is that “justice is everyone’s business”. Men and women, officers and soldiers, and local, national and international authorities alike all have a shared responsibility for reporting, and combating, this type of war crime. The importance of Mukwege’s enduring, dedicated and selfless efforts in this field cannot be overstated. He has repeatedly condemned impunity for mass r**e and criticised the Congolese government and other countries for not doing enough to stop the use of s*xual violence against women as a strategy and weapon of war.

Murad is herself a victim of war crimes. She refused to accept the social codes that require women to remain silent and ashamed of the abuses to which they have been subjected. She has shown uncommon courage in recounting her own sufferings and speaking up on behalf of other victims.

Murad is a member of the Yazidi minority in northern Iraq, where she lived with her family in the remote village of Kocho. In August 2014 the Islamic State (IS) launched a brutal, systematic attack on the villages of the Sinjar district, aimed at exterminating the Yazidi population. In Murad’s village, several hundred people were massacred. The younger women, including underage children, were abducted and held as s*x slaves. While a captive of the IS, Murad was repeatedly subjected to r**e and other abuses. Her assaulters threatened to execute her if she did not convert to their hateful, inhuman version of Islam.

Murad is just one of an estimated 3,000 Yazidi girls and women who were victims of r**e and other abuses by the IS army. The abuses were systematic, and part of a military strategy. Thus they served as a weapon in the fight against Yazidis and other religious minorities.

After a three-month nightmare Murad managed to flee. Following her escape, she chose to speak openly about what she had suffered. In 2016, at the age of just 23, she was named the UN’s first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

This year marks a decade since the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1820 (2008), which determined that the use of s*xual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict constitutes both a war crime and a threat to international peace and security. This is also set out in the Rome Statute of 1998, which governs the work of the International Criminal Court. The Statute establishes that s*xual violence in war and armed conflict is a grave violation of international law. A more peaceful world can only be achieved if women and their fundamental rights and security are recognised and protected in war.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize is firmly embedded in the criteria spelled out in Alfred Nobel’s will. Mukwege and Murad have both put their personal security at risk by courageously combating war crimes and seeking justice for the victims. They have thereby promoted the fraternity of nations through the application of principles of international law.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 “for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics” with one half to Arthur Ashkin “for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems” and the other half jointly to Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland “for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses.”

The inventions being honoured this year have revolutionised laser physics. Extremely small objects and incredibly fast processes now appear in a new light. Not only physics, but also chemistry, biology and medicine have gained precision instruments for use in basic research and practical applications.

Arthur Ashkin invented optical tweezers that grab particles, atoms and molecules with their laser beam fingers. Viruses, bacteria and other living cells can be held too, and examined and manipulated without being damaged. Ashkin’s optical tweezers have created entirely new opportunities for observing and controlling the machinery of life.

Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland paved the way towards the shortest and most intense laser pulses created by mankind. The technique they developed has opened up new areas of research and led to broad industrial and medical applications; for example, millions of eye operations are performed every year with the sharpest of laser beams.

ബഹുമാനപെട്ട ധനകാര്യ വകുപ്പു മന്ത്രി ഡോ തോമസ്സ് ഐസക്കും ഇന്ന് നമ്മുടെ കോളേജ് സന്ദർശിക്കുക ഉണ്ടായി. 75 ഏക്കർ വിസ്തൃതി ഉള്ള കാമ്പസിലെ എല്ലാ കെട്ടിടങ്ങളും ലേഡീസ് ഹോസ്റ്റൽ, മെൻസ് ഹോസ്റ്റൽ കൂടാതെ പുതിയതായി വരുന്ന ഓരോ ബിൽഡിംങ്ങുകളും അദ്ദേഹം സന്ദർശിച്ചു. ഇത്രയും വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള കോളേജ് കാമ്പസ് കേരളത്തിൽ സിഇടിക്കും പിന്നെ നമ്മുടെ ജിഇസി ക്കും മാത്രം സ്വന്തം എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ഓർമ്മപ്പെടുത്തി.

ഒരു മരം പോലും വെട്ടാതെയായിരിക്കണം ഈ കോളേജിന്റെ തുടർന്നുള്ള വികസന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. ഇപ്പോൾ മരം മുറിച്ച് ബിൽഡിംഗ് പണിയാൻ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ച സ്ഥലവും മുറിച്ച മരവും അദ്ദേഹം സന്ദർശിച്ചു. ഒരോ മരങ്ങളും സംരക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടണം എന്നും നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചു. മെക്കാനിക്കൽ ബ്ലോക്ക് ഇപ്പോൾ തീരുമാനിച്ച സ്ഥലത്ത് വളരെ ഞെരുക്കി പണിയേണ്ടതില്ല എന്നും എല്ലാ സൗകര്യങ്ങളോടുകൂടി മാസ്റ്റർ പ്ലാനിൽ നിർദ്ദേശിച്ച സ്ഥലത്ത് തന്നെ നിർമ്മിക്കണം എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു.

കോളേജിലെ കെമിക്കൽ ബ്ലോക്ക് മുതൽ ഇപ്പോളുള്ള പിജി ബ്ലോക്ക് വരെ നടന്ന് കണ്ട അദ്ദേഹം ഈ സ്ഥലം ആണ് കാമ്പസിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഭാഗം എന്ന് അഭിപ്രായം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി. ഓരോ ബ്ലോക്കുകളും അവ തമ്മിൽ ഉള്ള അകലങ്ങളും പ്രത്യേകം കണ്ട് അതിന്റെ ആവശ്യകതയെക്കുറിച്ചും സംസാരിച്ചു. ഭാവിയിൽ നിർമ്മിക്കുന്ന അക്കാഡമിക്ക് ബ്ലോക്കുകൾ ആ സ്ഥലത്തിനടുത്ത് തന്നെ ഇപ്പോൾ മാസ്റ്റർ പ്ലാനിൽ പറയുന്ന പോലെത്തന്നെ ആണ് വരേണ്ടത് എന്ന് നിർദ്ദേശം നൽകി. കോളേജിലെ വികസന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്കായി 30 കോടിയുടെ പദ്ധതികൾ ഇതിനകം തന്നെ അനുമതി നൽകിയതായി അറിയിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം ഈ വികസന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ മാതൃകാപരമായി നടപ്പിലാക്കണം എന്നും അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു.

ബഹു.കൃഷി വകുപ്പു മന്ത്രി അഡ്വ. വി എസ്സ് സുനിൽകുമാർ ഇന്ന് തൃശുർ ഗവ.എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് കോളേജ് സന്ദർശിച്ചു. ഏകദേശം ഒന്നര മണിയോടെ കോളേജിൽ എത്തിച്ചേർന്ന തൃശൂരിന്റെ പ്രിയ എം എൽ എ കൂടിയായ മന്ത്രി മെക്കാനിക്കൽ ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റ് ബിൽഡിംഗ് നിർമ്മിക്കുവാൻ ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്ന മരങ്ങൾ മുറിച്ചു മാറ്റേണ്ട സ്ഥലം സന്ദർശിച്ചു. മുറിച്ചു മാറ്റേണ്ട ഓരോ മരങ്ങളും നേരിട്ട് കാണുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന് മാസ്റ്റർ പ്ലാനിൽ അക്കാഡമിക്ക് ബ്ലോക്കുകൾ നിർമ്മിക്കാനായി മാറ്റി വച്ചിരുന്ന സ്ഥലവും ബഹുമാനപ്പെട്ട മന്ത്രി സന്ദർശിച്ചു. കാമ്പസ് സയൻസ് ഫോറം പ്രവർത്തകരും മറ്റ് പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണ പ്രവർത്തകരും മരം മുറിച്ചു മാറ്റുന്നതിനെ എതിർക്കുന്ന കാര്യം അധികാരികളുടെയും മെക്കാനിക്കൽ ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റിലെ അദ്ധ്യാപകരുടെയും ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ പെടുത്തി. ഇത് കോളേജിലെ അധ്യാപകരുടെയും മെക്കാനിക്കൽ ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റിലെ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെയും മാത്രം ആവശ്യമായി കണക്കാക്കാനാവില്ല എന്നും തൃശൂർ ഗവ.എഞ്ചി
നീയറിംഗ് കോളേജ് എന്നത് പൊതുസ്ഥാപനം ആണെന്നും എല്ലാവരുടെയും അഭിപ്രായങ്ങൾ പരിഗണിക്കണമെന്നും നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ഒരു മരം പോലും മുറിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല എന്ന കർശന നിർദ്ദേശം നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു. മാസ്റ്റർ പ്ലാനിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ സ്ഥലം മെക്കാനിക്കൽ ബ്ലോക്ക് നിർമ്മിക്കുവാൻ ഏററവും ഉതകുന്ന സ്ഥലം ആണെന്നും ആ സ്ഥലത്തു തന്നെ ബിൽഡിംഗ് പണിയണം എന്നും മന്ത്രി നിർദേശം നൽകി. അതിനായി വരുന്ന കൂടുതൽ ചിലവുകൾക്ക് ആവശ്യമായ പണം എം എൽ എ ഫണ്ടിൽ നിന്നും അനുവദിക്കുന്നത് ആലോചിക്കാം എന്നും മന്ത്രി അറിയിച്ചു.
