We are a group of four (Sam Jebadurai, Shilpa George, Anupriya, Santosh) Social Work trainee from Department of Social Work (Community Development), Madras Christian College (MCC). We are at point placed in a community called Annai Sathya Nagar that was identified during the flood relief work done by the department. There are totally 97 families in the village belonging to Schedule Tribe (Irrular
Tribe) and out of these families, 8 families were were rehabilitated from bonded labour about six months ago with help from one of the INGO. They have been provided with 1.5 cent land each with help from government but no houses so far. We as social work students giving importance to Report Writing, Case Work, Case Study, Community Organization Programs have this time also acknowledge to put these skills into action by taking up few agendas such as:
1. Construction of 8 houses (for 8 families)
2. Sanitary Health Camp
3. Economic Empowerment trainings
4. Importance to Anganwadi, Education
5. Teaching them monetary skills (maths)
6. Joining them with Self Help Groups SHG
Construction being our primitive and most important agenda of this field work training. We are at point tapping resources either in funds or materials for the construction of the house. So far we have approached government officials from local area counselor to Revenue Inspector for help and they have been very helpful in one or the other way. Depending solely on government and the time period they take to sanction materials and fund for the construction would take another 6 months to 1 year for the completion of the project while they have already waited for about 7 months and the addition of another year to that would leave these tribals without basic facility of shelter which is unjust to any human. So we have taken initiative of raising funds and acquiring materials for these eight families to provide them shelter before we complete our field work in the community by end of March 2016.
!!!!!Please help us to help the community!!!!!
