Say Hi to us on WhatsApp at 9737224343 for regular updates]
CityShor updates you with the NEW, UNUSUAL, UNEXPLORED and the BEST of Surat that will shock you!
Tum lakh koshish karlo, par main padhta rahunga.
Tum hath pakadke le jaao, main fir daud aaunga.
Tum kahoge kaam karo, main inkaar na kar paaunga,
Fir kaam pura kar, main padhne laut jaaunga.
Tum kahoge school mat jaao , toh main footpath pe padh lunga,
Bas ek Disha dikhao , main rasta khud dhund laaunga.
These lines are exactly what runs through the minds of every little boy and girl sitting on that footpath in the posh area of piplod, breaking through the idea of school being four walls and chair and tables.
Everybody reading this article that belongs to Surat, definitely visits Piplod every other day and would be amazed to realize something like a footpath school exists, but we haven’t ever noticed it. With a similar dilemma of what exactly Disha-footpath school is and how it runs, I reached the service lane footpath near Shardayatan school and was welcomed by some 15-20 chirpy little kids wishing me a “ good evening ma’am, how are you?” And with them stood the proud founder of Disha-footpath school, Shruti Jain, a professor by profession this young lady, with her friend Farhat Sanchawala started this school with the sole motive to educate the children of slums and those who couldn't afford going to tuitions or schools.
There are in total 4 such schools running at the same time; 6-7pm in four different places, one on the footpath on the service lane near Shardayatan, 2 near the Piplod RTO, and one near floral garden. The reason behind keeping different places for teaching in the same area is that the kids refuse to travel and come for learning, so the school goes near them and teaches all that they can. The teachers are housewives, and students who happily volunteer a hour in a day to deliver their knowledge to these kids. If you are inspired already just pay them a visit and who knows you might want to become a teacher too?
Disha-footpath school already has some 100 students regularly attending their classes, which include basics to kids who donot attend school, revision sessions for kids of 9th and 10th std, art and craft classes, martial art classes and much more. Its startled me, when Shruti took me around and knew the name of every student of her school, the zeal in her to educate was seen in the way she went to every household and persuaded parents to send their kids to study.
They accept donations in the form of books, tables, chairs, or if you are a tuition teacher please feel free to contact them and help their students attain proper guidance through your classes, and the best you can do is volunteer and be there for a great cause.
I couldn't relate the hymn we sang in our childhood to anything more but this school,
“ This little guiding light of mine, I am going to let it shine, let it shine all the time, let it shine “
And also the answer to every dilemma one has about rising above educational stereotypes lies in the same hymn,
“ Hide it under a bush, oh no! I am going to let it shine, let it shine all the time, let it shine”

LET'S MAKE THEM FAMOUS -
Trustees of ‘Disha’ (a Surat based NGO) – Farhat Sanchawala and Shruti Jain, have initiated a noble campaign of teaching poor street children. By now, they have successfully provided basic education to about 200 children since past 2 years along with their team of 12 members. They spend 2 hours of their lives daily in the evening from 5:30 to 7:30 PM to teach these underprivileged children near Shardayatan school, Kargil Chowk, Piplod and at three more locations nearby. If anyone wants to volunteer with the Disha team for teaching these kids or giving away used textbooks or any other sort of help, you may contact on cell no. 8238266399. Kudos to the entire ‘Disha’ team for great efforts!
