Have I written about this particular scene from Gulzar's Doordarshan series Mirza Ghalib before? If I have, listen again because it is absolutely amazing. If I were a man, I would call it my Roman empire, but pop culture references seem to have left nothing for women. But watch till the end, for Naseeruddin Shah's sly side glance is truly to die for.

So Zauq and Ghalib were contemporary poets. While Zauq considered Ghalib his rival, the latter didn’t, for he was pretty sure that he was far better. Zauq was also the designated 'royal poet', but if that ever bothered Ghalib, he would usually cover it up with his tongue-in-cheek commentary. Zauq wasn’t the roguish kind, unlike Ghalib, and would mostly remain silent. On one occasion, Zauq was passing through Ghalib's neighbourhood on a palanquin. Seeing a poet on a palanquin, Ghalib being Ghalib, he had to make a comment. He shouted loudly, 'Hua hai Shah ka musahib, phire hai itraata' (He has become the King's friend, look how he puts on airs)!

Zauq silently moved on. But at the next royal mushairah, Ghalib received an invite. Zauq wanted to bring up the incident and put him on a spot - make him recite the lines in front of the King, which would definitely make the King angry. On doing so, Ghalib's response was that the line was only from the 'maqta' (the last couplet) of his latest ghazal. When asked to recite the maqta, he immediately tweaked it to make it not about Zauq, but about himself:

'Hua hai Shah ka musahib phire hai itraata
Wagarna sheher mein Ghalib ki abroo kya hai'

Seeing the King visibly pleased, and thus achieving the exact opposite of what he had wanted to, Zauq coldly said, 'Well, if the maqta is so beautiful, why don't we listen to the entire ghazal?'

Held by a roomful of expectant gazes, Ghalib slowly took out a piece of paper from his pocket, and recited this particular ghazal -
'Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke tu kya hai
Tum hi kaho ke ye andaaz-e-guftagoo kya hai'

What a beautiful ghazal it is. Amid many waahs and irshaads, Ghalib's close friend sitting beside him at the mushairah took the piece of paper from his hands. The paper was blank. Ghalib had made up the ghazal on the spot! 02/11/2025

Ghalibs poetry brought to life through masterful artistry of Naseer udin Shah.
