On 27 August, the Jindal India Institute hosted an engaging author’s talk with Dr. Atul Mishra on his book “The Sovereign Lives of India and Pakistan: Post-Partition Statehood in South Asia.”

Why did we revisit a book published in 2021? Because the India-Pakistan story continues to unfold in dangerously familiar ways. In the wake of Operation Sindoor and renewed tensions, a fundamental question resurfaced: what does it mean for two states, born of the same rupture, to enact their sovereignty in opposition to each other?

This discussion offered a retrospective lens by tracing how India and Pakistan, since Partition, have continually defined and redefined their sovereignty through opposition to one another - while also illuminating the deeper logics that continue to shape South Asia’s present.

Celebrating India’s Rich Heritage at the ‘Namaste India’ Workshop | June 17, 2025

The Jindal India Institute organised the ‘Namaste India’ workshop for the Naveen Jindal Young Global Research Fellows, hosted by the Office of Institutional Advancement (IASGE) JGU.

Under the theme ‘India Captured: Culture, Cuisine and Civilisation’, we explored India through two fascinating sessions.

The morning session titled ‘Beyond Curry and Tikka: The Art and Craft of an Indian Meal’ led by Ms. Navreet Kaur Rana, Fellow at the Jindal India Institute, took us on a culinary journey across India’s diverse foodscape, exploring cooking methods, regional varieties, and the anthropology of Indian food. It was both educational and incredibly fun!

The evening session titled ‘The Cultural Heritage of India: An Introduction’ by Prof. (Dr.) Neha Khetrapal, Fellow at the Jindal India Institute, provided an academic deep-dive into India’s cultural evolution. She discussed contemporary cultural markers, explored myths and their significance, traced the evolution of temple architecture, examined emerging religious identities, and celebrated the concept of female divinity in Indian culture.

This workshop perfectly balanced fun and academic learning, offering our international fellows an authentic introduction to India’s incredible diversity and heritage.

The Jindal India Institute had the honour of hosting Dr. Kevin Greenbank, Archivist at the Centre of South Asian Studies, University of Cambridge, for a distinguished public lecture and a student workshop.

In his lecture, Dr. Greenbank offered deep insights into the contemporary state of archives and the evolving role of the state in archival preservation. The following day, he led an engaging workshop that introduced students to rare archival materials - including letters, diaries, and photographs - documenting the lives of Indians during the First and Second World Wars.

Both sessions were highly interactive and left students with new perspectives on historical research and the richness of archival sources.
