Learning Through Play: 'Bag-Free School' Initiative Brings Joyful Education with Traditional Kitchen Play

Turning classrooms into spaces of creativity and hands-on learning, Deccan Education Society's New English Medium School, Pre-Primary section had organised a vibrant 'Bag-Free School' activity on Saturday, where students experienced joyful learning through the traditional Bhatukali (pretend miniature kitchen utensil play).
As part of the activity, children were introduced to a variety of kitchen utensils and household objects. They enthusiastically participated in simple, age-appropriate tasks such as washing vegetables, peeling, grating, chopping, rolling puris, and pounding groundnuts under the guidance of their teachers.
The experiential learning exercise helped children understand everyday objects and activities while enhancing their vocabulary, sensory awareness, and fine motor skills. The initiative also encouraged curiosity, teamwork and confidence by allowing students to learn through play rather than textbooks.
"Young children learn best when they explore, touch, and experience things themselves. The 'Bag-Free School' initiative is designed to make learning enjoyable while developing life skills, language and motor coordination through practical activities," said Shilpa Kulkarni, Principal of the school.
The activity was organised by the teachers of the Pre-Primary section under the guidance of Principal Shilpa Kulkarni, reflecting the school's commitment to making early childhood education engaging, interactive, and meaningful.
