Journalism Training opportunity in development reporting: Following the aid money

This Thomson Reuters Foundation programme will assist journalists to produce stories that bring new insight into the impact of development assistance. Stories might include a report looking at whether specific allocations were spent as intended; a data analysis looking at aid spending on different geographic or thematic areas, and assessing the effect this has had; or a series of stories looking at aid policy at the highest level and how this is affecting the lives of citizens.

In whatever story they cover, participating journalists must be ready to report on the benefits of aid money as well as any flaws. They must also be willing to explore deeper issues – be they political, economic, or cultural – that influence aid spending and policy.

The programme will provide editorial guidance on participants’ story ideas, an intensive workshop to develop stories and share relevant skills, and one-to-one mentoring to help bring these stories to completion. Participants will also be eligible to apply for modest funding to help cover the costs of reporting, though please note not all participants will necessarily receive funding.

The workshop will take place in Nairobi, Kenya from 20-24 June 2016 and travel and subsistence costs will be covered.
