When I took my son for his routine health check-up here in France, I was sure everything was perfectly fine. Both my husband and I have 20/20 vision. My son could spot chalk dust on the floor, had perfect eye contact, and could easily see tiny objects even in dim light.
We never imagined he could have an eye problem.
But when the doctor examined him, we were hit with something unexpected: 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺.
Shocked, I asked, "But he spots the tiniest things without any trouble?"
The doctor’s answer completely opened my eyes. He said, "Babies can't tell you their vision is blurry. Their eyes are highly adaptable and quickly accommodate to focus, but internally, their tiny eyes are under a massive amount of strain."
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘆?
It’s a condition where the eye isn't perfectly round, but shaped more like an egg, making things blurry and hard to focus on.
Here is the most critical part: "𝗜𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻, 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁." If a child doesn't receive a clear picture, their brain doesn't get the right visual signals, which can hinder their overall cognitive learning and development.
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱?
We assume that if our genetics and eyesight are great, our kids are safe. But Astigmatism can develop naturally during growth or simply be due to the shape of the cornea from birth.
𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲𝗿, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀:
❌ Frequently bumping into furniture or falling over while walking.
❌ Holding books, toys, or objects too close to their face.
❌ Constantly rubbing their eyes or squinting to see clearly.
𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 (𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀):
1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟵-𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘂𝗽: Get your baby's eyes checked by a pediatrician or eye doctor as soon as they turn 9 months old—even if everything seems completely normal from the outside!
2️⃣ 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝟯: Keep phones, tablets, and TVs away from kids under 3. Screen time causes severe eye strain in toddlers. Encourage them to play outside in natural daylight instead.
Today, my son wears his tiny glasses and looks absolutely adorable! ❤️ More than anything, I feel a deep sense of relief that we caught it at the right time, and his vision will now develop exactly as it should.
As a mother, I want to reach as many parents as possible with this message. A small step you take today can secure your child's future vision.
