Special lecture on: Language and Silence in context of Indian Philosophy
Ranchi, 20th February 2026- Department of Anthropology and Tribal Studies (DATS), Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ), organized two distinguished special lectures on the theme “Language and Silence” and “Questions and Insights: Aspects of Indian Philosophy”.
The event featured Prof. Ranjit Kumar Dev Goswami, Consulting Professor, Visva-Bharti University, Santiniketan, West Bengal as the chief speaker, with Chairperson Prof. Rabindranath Sarma, Dean of the School for the Study of Culture and Head of the Department of Anthropology and Tribal Studies. Other dignitaries- Faculty members of DATS: Prof. Sucheta Sen Chaudhuri, Dr. Rajanikant Pandey, Dr. M. Ramakrishnan were also present.
This lecture was organized in collaboration with the Field Station of the Anthropological Survey of India, the Centre for Endangered Languages, the Centre of Indigenous Knowledge and Sustainable Development, the Equal Opportunity Cell, and the National Cadet Corps, CUJ, Ranchi.
The lecture, “Language and Silence” gave insights how language serve as a vehicle of knowledge and limitation in expressing ultimate reality. Prof. Goswami mentioned about Jyotirindranath Tagore who was elder brother cm mentor of Rabindranath Tagore’s and his connection with Jharkhand. He interpreted the dichotomy of language and silence by comparing the two brothers, one who is famous for his words and other known for silence. He also mentioned about George Steiner, author of the book ‘Language and Silence’ and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s famous quote “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent”. Prof. Goswami talked about Tetralemma of Nagarjuna who was considered as the 2nd Buddha and also highlighted the contribution of major linguist like Ferdinand De Saussure, Derrida and Sigmund Freud. He also highlighted the importance of language and silence since the time of Rigveda and various Upanishads which are full of questions related to different aspects of life. He explained how silence becomes a form of recognition that language is insufficient to express total Truth as truth is Anekanta. This lecture series aimed to foster critical reflection, intellectual engagement, and a deeper appreciation of the philosophical heritage of India among students, scholars, and faculty members.
University authority particularly Vice Chancellor Prof. Sarang Medhekar appreciates the initiatives of the department organising this special lecture in the Department of Anthropology and Tribal Studies, Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ).
