Spatial Thinking Isn’t a Subject — It’s a Mindset.
We just completed our 6th Spatial Thinking Workshop with 55 educators from DIETs and CTEs across Karnataka — hosted at DSERT, Bengaluru with support from NGP-DST.

What stood out most was the curiosity in the room:
✨ What is spatial thinking?
✨ How can it help children understand their surroundings better?

Key voices shaped the workshop:
➡️ Dr. M. Mohanty (DST, GoI) on why spatial thinking is essential for a data-literate future.
➡️ Prof. Dr. Shamita Kumar (PMU–DST, BVIEER) on integrating spatial thinking into teacher education.
➡️ Dr. Jagdeeshwar Rao, Director, DSERT Karnataka with support from Mrs. Shivamma and Mrs. Girija, reaffirmed DSERT’s commitment.

Teachers worked on simple activities and tools helping them understand how easily spatial thinking fits into everyday learning.

🔍 When teachers think spatially, children start thinking analytically.

Aligned with National Geospatial Policy 2022 and NEP 2020, this workshop reinforced one truth:
💡 Building teacher capacity has the highest impact.

Cricket is all about spatial thinking — reading space, angles, and patterns.

In yesterday’s India–Australia match, our Women in Blue showed it perfectly:
• Batters found field gaps with precision
• Bowlers adjusted lines based on placement
• Fielders anticipated direction and distance

That’s exactly what geospatial thinking is — understanding how space, position, and movement shape outcomes.

From cricket fields to climate maps — it’s all about knowing where and why.
Tell us how you use spatial thinking in your fields.

Ever plotted your data and found it floating somewhere in the ocean?
You’re not alone — that’s a coordinate system mismatch!
Here’s what’s happening.
Every map uses a Coordinate Reference System (CRS) — basically, a way to translate latitudes and longitudes into real-world positions.
If your data (say, WGS84) and your map (say, UTM Zone 43N) don’t match, your points can drift — sometimes way off course.
Always check the CRS before importing shapefiles.
In QGIS or ArcGIS, set your project CRS and layer CRS consistently.
Reproject data when needed — don’t just assume it’ll align.

So next time your shapefile ends up in the ocean — it’s not a bug, it’s just bad projection!

A satellite image is a direct photograph of the Earth’s surface. Do you agree ?

Monsoon 2025 is more than a season—it’s a spatial story. From where the rains fell, to when the storms intensified, to how they reshaped land and lives—every drop reveals patterns.
This year:
All-India rainfall was 8% above normal
East & Northeast: 20% below normal
Northwest: 27% above normal
Western Himalayas faced cloudbursts, floods & landslides from the rare interaction of Western Disturbances with the monsoon trough
Thanks to geospatial technologies—satellites, drones, GIS, AI—we can now see and analyze these patterns in real time.
Spatial thinking connects data, maps, and human experiences to help us understand not just the weather, but the deeper relationships between space, place, and change.
What patterns did you notice in this year’s monsoon where you live? Share in the comments!

Near vs. Far: Why Location Matters!
Things that are close together often influence each other — that’s called spatial association.
Example: Cities often grow near rivers because rivers provide water, transportation, and fertile land.
What’s something in your city or village that exists because of what’s nearby?
