📌 Slide 2 – Boil the Leaf in Water

Boiling the leaf in water kills the cells, stops metabolic activities and prepares the leaf for the starch test.
Understanding why each step is performed is just as important as remembering it.

The leaf is heated in alcohol using a water bath, never directly over a flame. Alcohol removes chlorophyll so the iodine colour change becomes clearly visible.

After removing chlorophyll, the leaf becomes brittle. Washing it in warm water softens the leaf and removes the alcohol.
