Nepal witnessed its biggest youth-led protests in recent history as thousands of students and young professionals—popularly called Gen Z protesters—poured onto the streets against a sudden government decision to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube.
The demonstrations, initially peaceful, turned violent when security forces used water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and live rounds. At least 19 people were killed and hundreds injured in clashes across major cities.
Protesters declared the ban an attack on free speech and digital freedom, accusing the government of suppressing dissent while ignoring corruption and nepotism. Many carried placards reading “Shut down corruption, not social media.”
In a dramatic turn, the government lifted the ban the same evening. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, taking “moral responsibility” for the bloodshed, while curfews were imposed in Kathmandu and other urban centres.
Human rights groups condemned the excessive use of force and called for accountability. Analysts noted that beyond digital rights, the uprising reflects wider frustrations with inequality, lack of jobs, and the growing influence of political dynasties—issues deeply resonating with Nepal’s young generation.
