১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলনের শহীদদের আত্মত্যাগের স্বীকৃতিস্বরূপ ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ নভেম্বর ইউনেসকো (UNESCO) ২১ শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে ‘আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস’ হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে [১, ৫]। বাংলাদেশ ও সৌদি আরবের যৌথ প্রস্তাবে ১৮৮টি দেশের সমর্থনে এই ঐতিহাসিক স্বীকৃতি মিলেছিল [৩]। এরপর ২০০০ সাল থেকে বিশ্বজুড়ে দিনটি প্রতি বছর নিজ নিজ মাতৃভাষার মর্যাদা ও বহুভাষিকতাকে উৎসাহিত করতে পালিত হয়ে আসছে ।

গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তথ্যসমূহ:
ঘোষণা: ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ নভেম্বর ইউনেস্কোর ৩০তম সাধারণ অধিবেশনে ।
প্রথম পালন: ২০০০ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি ।
মূল উদ্যোক্তা: বাংলাদেশ এবং সৌদি আরব ।
পটভূমি: ১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে (বর্তমান বাংলাদেশ) বাংলা ভাষাকে রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার দাবিতে আত্মত্যাগ ।
লক্ষ্য: মাতৃভাষার প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা, ভাষাগত ও সাংস্কৃতিক বৈচিত্র্য এবং বহুভাষিকতা প্রচার করা ।
পরবর্তীতে জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ অধিবেশনেও এই স্বীকৃতি আরও সুদৃঢ় করা হয় ।
