The Buddha was born Prince Siddhartha Gautama at some point in the 5th or 6th century BC in Lumbini, Nepal. He was born to royal parents and raised in great luxury, but he denounced this lifestyle and set out as a wandering ascetic.

Siddhartha spent years learning and meditating and eventually achieved the highest level of nirvana, or full enlightenment and a release from suffering. He then became known as “the Buddha” (“the Awakened One”) and spent the rest of his life traveling and teaching what would become the core beliefs of Buddhism.
