“I could have gone to IIT-Madras,” VR Lalithambika told ThePrint in an interview. “I was an only child, you see. They fixed my marriage immediately after my engineering course.”

A control engineer, Lalithambika has served with for 30 years and has contributed to every rocket currently in use.

Lalithambika grew up in 's surrounded by engineers — her father, uncle, and later, her husband.

However, it was her mathematician grandfather who ignited her curiosity in science. Together, they would watch the launch of sounding rockets from the Equatorial Rocket Launching Station.

As a graduate of the College of Engineering, Trivandrum, Lalithambika excelled at the GATE exam to gain postgraduate admission to IISc and IITs.

However, due to her marriage, she enrolled in an MTech program at her old college, balancing her studies with her new role as a wife, and later, a mother.

In 1988, Lalithambika joined Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and quickly found herself involved in the project.

In 2018, she was selected to spearhead the mission under India's Human Space Flight Programme. And has participated in nearly 100 space missions!

Despite her incredible journey, Lalithambika is reluctant to call herself a success.

She humbly says, "Everyone here is successful, not just me. I have been very fortunate to work in an organization with a culture that I relate to."
