Rising risk of cyberattacks on U.S. companies tests public-private collaboration

Last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a warning stating that there was a heightened risk of a cyberattack on private U.S. companies that provide critical infrastructure services in the country.

In the memo, which was issued by the department's Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team on a restricted computer network, officials warned of "increasing hostility" against "U.S. critical infrastructure organizations" that could result in the disruption of "control processes," such as the operations of chemical, electric and water plants.

Facebook eyes $1bn deal for GPS app Waze

Facebook is in talks on a potential USD 1 billion deal to buy the Israel-based GPS mobile navigation app Waze, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The report late yesterday, citing unnamed sources, said the discussions were "serious" but that no deal had been finalized.

Waze, which claims more than 40 million users, could allow the world's biggest social network to expand its offerings in areas such as driving directions, or avoiding

traffic jams or car accidents.

Idea, Huawei team up on optic fibre network

Telecom operator Idea Cellular, and Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei jointly announced the successful commercial deployment of latest optical fibre that supports data transmission of up to 8 terrabit of per second.

"With 100G DWDM system...Idea is geared up for the data explosion in coming years. Idea has always been leading in new technologies' deployment and this is one more example of the same." Idea Cellular Chief Technology Officer Anil Tandon said in a statement.

DWDM is latest technology for deployment of optical fibre network for transmission of data vital for telecom and broadband services.

Govt approves National Cyber Security Policy

The government on Wednesday approved the National Cyber Security Policy that aims to create a secure computing environment in the country and build capacities to strengthen the current set up with focus on manpower training.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the policy which stresses on augmenting India’s indigenous capabilities in terms of developing the cyber security set up.
It aims to create a cyber security framework that will address all related issues over a long period. The framework will lead to specific actions and programmes to enhance the security posture of country’s cyber space.

Besides, cyber security intelligence forms an integral component to be able to anticipate attacks and quickly adopt counter measures.

*Inflation: In simple language, inflation is the rate at which prices increase annually. Essentially, prices go up due to two factors:
• Cost-push factors: Cost-push factors inflation occurs when there is an increase in the cost of production of an item, which then gets translated into a higher price for that item in the market.
• Demand-pull factors: Demand-pull factors inflation occurs when there is more money with consumers compared to the total number of goods available in market. With too much money chasing too few goods, prices rise because people are willing to pay more for the same item. This type of inflation usually arises when the demand exceeds supply.
On the other hand, when prices fall it is known as deflation. However, this is more of a theoretical concept as developing countries rarely experience deflation.
