I hope you can take the time to read this post.

Best wishes,
Anitaelise.

Guided Online Practice: Transforming Piano Lessons I continue to be amazed at my first batch of piano students and how different they were from the students of today. It was in the year 2000 or 2001 and I taught students with relaxed family schedul…

The 30 Piece Challenge has received an enthusiastic response!!!

Here's an image of certificates of some of the students who've achieved a milestone of 10. It's getting quite exciting now, as some students cross 20 and get closer to finishing their challenge.

Please follow on Instagram to view all the 30 Piece Challenge updates.

Way to go students!

No Book Beginners by Tim Topham is a very exciting introduction to creative piano teaching!!!

Reading it took me back to memories I have of music making as a child. Bedtime songs with my mum. Family music evenings with singing and piano or guitar accompaniment and the mad laughter and happiness that often accompanies families high on music.

I remember piano lessons as a child - listening sessions and music discussions with my piano teacher. Weekly student meets and annual home concerts. Piano lesson friends who became real friends. A feeling of learning with a community that I try to bring to my students in our student meet-up’s and casual concerts.

Tim’s book wasn’t my first exposure to his ideas on no book teaching. I must confess that I’ve been a TopMusic member for many years and have access to the academy which includes a course on No Book Teaching. One among many other courses there, that have influenced my teaching over the years.

My teaching moved to a combination of different approaches - method books, with no book chord playing and some rote. June 2023 had me starting a couple of students with no-book chord accompaniment because they wanted to learn hymn accompaniment very quickly. Teaching no book accompaniment brought piano student sibling performances and family singing sessions and it’s been quite thrilling!

Tim’s book No Book Beginners will help piano teachers find clarity on that one aspect of no book teaching that fits in with their values and teaching goals. The lesson plans are wonderful - well structured and easy to use - both as a solo method or fitted into lessons based on a method book.

My piano students often need a varied approach to teaching, so I plan to use Tim’s lessons along with a method-book approach side by side. I think these no-book lessons will be wonderful even for students interested solely in reading music - giving musical skills and music comprehension a boost makes the reading just go so much quicker.

No Book Beginners is a must read for every piano teacher who wishes to reach the piano student of today!

Here's Student A playing a teacher-accompanied piano duet - practise for our next Casual Concert.

This still is a work in progress, and we'll be using this video to talk about techniques that will help coordination between the primo (Student A) and the secondo (Anitaelise).

A has been working very strongly on legato and 3/4 time this month and it's lovely hearing the results.

Well done A!
