‘Lekhan Prerna Din’ and the Birth Anniversary of the legendary social reformer and writer, Annabhau Sathe.
On 1st August 2026, the institute organised guest lectures to observe ‘Lekhan Prerna Din’ alongside the Birth Anniversary of the legendary social reformer and writer, Annabhau Sathe.
The program featured two eminent resource persons: Dr. Kishor Warbhe, Lecturer in the Department of Marathi, and Dr. Sudesh Bhowate, Professor in the Department of English.
Dr. Kishor Warbhe underscored the enduring relevance of Annabhau Sathe’s revolutionary thoughts in contemporary times. He offered insightful commentary on Sathe’s extensive literary contributions across diverse genres, highlighting how his writing served as a instrument for social reform.
Dr. Sudesh Bhowate presented an engaging biographical sketch of Annabhau Sathe, detailing his upbringing in a Dalit family, his poignant life struggles, and his extraordinary literary journey—from carving his initial thoughts on stone to becoming one of Maharashtra’s most acclaimed literary figures. Dr. Bhowate also highlighted how despite having virtually no formal schooling and facing extreme poverty and social discrimination, Sathe went on to write 35 novels, 10 plays, 24 short story collections, and numerous folk songs (powadas) and travelogues.
His literature gave voice to workers, peasants, and marginalized communities, making his life journey from carving words on stone to becoming a celebrated giant of Marathi literature a deep source of inspiration for students and aspiring writers.
His iconic novel Fakira (1959) won the Maharashtra State Government Award in 1961 and remains a cornerstone of Dalit and Marathi literature.
The session successfully inspired the audience by honoring Annabhau Sathe's legacy and highlighting the transformative power of literature. Celebrating his birth anniversary as Lekhan Prerna Din serves to encourage students to harness the power of writing for expression, empathy, and social reflection, following in Sathe's footsteps.
