Protons and neutrons are almost identical particles if we exclude the electric charge. They have almost similar mass, dipole moment, and quantum mechanical spin. In the 1930s, Werner Heisenberg was trying to understand the nature of the strong nuclear force. It was concluded that neutron and proton are different versions of the same object - the nucleon. They form what we call in physics, an isospin doublet. An isospin is a quantum number. The isospin of a nucleon is 1/2. Any particle with 1/2 isospin would have two sub-particles with isospin +1/2 and -1/2. It's +1/2 for the proton and -1/2 for the neutron.
