THE BICYCLE PROJECT - Let your old bicycle help a poor village kid get to school

THE SHORT VERSION:
A brief about The Bicycle Project
Known by the very simple and easy to recall name of The Bicycle Project, this charity initiative took birth just outside Mumbai city, the financial metropolitan capital of India. The brainchild of three individuals: businessman Hemant Chhabra, his ex-teacher wife S

A truly proud moment looking back!

Born and raised in Bombay, I've worked with several well known media houses as a journalist. I’ve always wanted to live a life that served some purpose.
My friend Hemant Chhabra and his wife Sangeeta have a farmhouse in Maharashtra, in a village a few hours away from Bombay. They’d see tribal school kids hitching rides from strangers on their way to faraway schools and thought this very risky. So they asked if I could frame a letter to their society's committee head and gather all the unused bicycles lying around in the stairwells.
Something clicked in my brain and I suggested we do the same in the entire city. That was the spark that set fire to the idea of The Bicycle Project, which has donated cycles to thousands of children over the last 12 years.

The simplicity and honesty of the idea appealed to every person who heard of the project. We had people coming forward to give their time, energy, expertise and even funded us with no expectations as we were not a registered NGO. We had corporates organising events with bicycles so they could donate from their CSR quota, we had an international cycling group change their pan-India route tour to stop over at the farmhouse so they could meet us and see the work the project is doing. They also donated 25 shiny new bicycles. From students to professionals, people bonded over this simple, honest project in a truly serendipitous fashion over the last 12 years.

The Bicycle Project launched officially in November 2008 and wrapped up last year 2020) once we realized it would be impossible to operate anymore in the pandemic. Besides many different individuals, groups & organisations were doing stellar work with similar programmes. Having served multiple schools in the Wada district of Maharashtra, we’ve donated bicycles to thousands of schoolchildren that allowed them to continue studying despite their schools being situated far away. With girls being the first to drop out once they hit puberty, perhaps our most precious impact has been empowering girls to continue their education without risking their safety.

It was a great experience to be invited as the charity partner of the India Cycling Festival 2018 earlier this month, and we want to thank the organisers Parthasarathi Kharga and Hema Patil as well as all the generous donors for the donated bicycles we will give to the children in villages just outside Bombay so they can get to school faster.

Thank you also to Blösch Sascha for being such great company, and taking pics and video for us.

Meeting Dipak Panchal at the India Cycling Festival 2018 earlier this month, after what seems like a lifetime, was such a thrill.

I'll never forget the Dipak who with his waist-long dreadlocks, led the team of BMX stunt artists under the guidance of Rahul Mulani of Gear Bike Shop and performed some breathtaking moves at the very first event of The Bicycle Project India at Out Of The Blue Bandra back in 2009.

Today he runs his own business Sharptune and of course, mentors fledgling BMX stunt artists. Congrats Dipak and what a pleasure to reconnect!

Thank you to all who came, as speakers, as listeners, as sharers and carers and most importantly, supporters of a movement that is relevant to us all.
I was delighted with the turnout on a weekday evening, Thursday that too, so many folks cared enough to give of their time and showed up to learn from each other.

I am personally proud of the panel of speakers, each amazing and doing incredible work, who graced the event with their presence despite their busy schedules, some at short notice, and some having travelled from as far as Vikramgarh (3 hours outside Bombay), Pune, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and Pench: Santosh Tungare, Wirra Creado and Anagha Bhilare of Grains - to - Greens, Diipti Jhangiani, Sameer Agarwal of Foodroof.in, Natasha D'Costa, chef Michael Swamy, TBPI co-founder Hemant Chhabra, Dr. Rupa Shah, and joining us remotely via video message from his farm outside Bombay, was Reagan Creado.

Thank you Title Waves - Mumbai's first large format boutique bookstore. for your support and for giving us the venue and that beautiful big digital screen for absolutely free. It's a pity that leading publications have a policy of not mentioning the location because it is a commercial establishment.

Luckily it has been mentioned in all the radio interviews! I will be sharing those links soon.
