A Brief Scholarly Response to the Arguments and Doubts of Shakilism
Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm
Every misguided ideology attempts to support its beliefs through the Qur’an and Hadith. However, the true standard is to understand the Qur’an and Hadith according to the understanding of the Companions, the Tābi‘īn, and the Imams of Ahl al-Sunnah.
🔹 Doubt: We invite people to both the Qur’an and Hadith, so our position must be correct.
Answer: Merely quoting the Qur’an and Hadith is not sufficient to prove that a claim is correct. The real question is: according to which understanding and principles are the Qur’an and Hadith being interpreted? Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah understand the Qur’an and Hadith according to the understanding of the Companions, the Tābi‘īn, and the great Imams of the Ummah—not through personal or arbitrary interpretations.
Allah Almighty says:
﴿فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ﴾
“So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.”
(Sūrah al-Naḥl: 43)
Therefore, every argument presented from the Qur’an and Hadith must be examined in the light of authentic interpretation, authentic Hadith, context, and the understanding of the early generations of the Ummah.
🔹 Doubt: All the scholars failed to recognize the truth, and only we are upon the truth.
Answer: This claim itself is not proof that they are correct. In matters of religion, it is necessary to refer to reliable and recognized scholars.
🔹 Doubt: Dreams, spiritual revelations, and inspirations are proof of our truthfulness.
Answer: A dream may be glad tidings for a righteous person, but matters of creed or Sharī‘ah rulings cannot be established through dreams or spiritual revelations. The foundation of religion is the Qur’an and Sunnah.
🔹 Doubt: Whoever claims to be Imam Mahdi should be accepted as such.
Answer: A mere claim is not sufficient. Every claim must be examined in the light of the authentic narrations concerning Imam Mahdi and the established principles of Ahl al-Sunnah.
🔹 Doubt: People rejected the Prophets in the past, and today people are also rejecting us.
Answer: This comparison is incorrect because prophethood ended with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He ﷺ said:
“Lā nabiyya ba‘dī.”
“There is no prophet after me.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
🔹 Doubt: We are small in number, therefore we are upon the truth.
Answer: The criterion of truth is not numbers, but the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ummah.
🔹 Doubt: Our new interpretations reveal truths that were previously unknown to anyone.
Answer: Any new interpretation or belief that contradicts the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the understanding of the early generations cannot be accepted as part of religion. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever introduces into our religion something that is not from it, it is rejected.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
Conclusion
Every Muslim should avoid accepting any claim merely on the basis of emotions, dreams, spiritual revelations, or apparent arguments. Rather, every claim should be examined in the light of the Qur’an, authentic Hadith, the understanding of the Companions, and the guidance of reliable scholars.
This is the path to recognizing the truth and protecting oneself from misguidance.
May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to recognize the truth as truth and follow it, and to recognize falsehood as falsehood and avoid it. Āmīn.
