Legacies Revisited | Khelando (1976)

What happens when a game of wits becomes a matter of survival?

In May 1976, Indian National Theatre presented Khelando, a Gujarati adaptation of Anthony Shaffer’s acclaimed thriller Sleuth. Directed by Pravin Joshi, the production moved away from the familiar family dramas of its time to explore psychological suspense, deception, and unexpected twists.

At the centre were Pravin Joshi and Arvind Joshi, who carried the production as a true two-hander. Through sharp dialogue and shifting power dynamics, they kept audiences on edge through the evening.

Interestingly, the woman at the heart of their conflict never appeared on stage. Yet, her presence drove the twists and turns of the story, making an unseen character central to the entire narrative.

With its minimalist staging and gripping storytelling, Khelando showed how suspense and psychological drama could hold an audience without spectacle, marking an important moment in the evolution of Gujarati theatre.

Revisited today through the archives of INT Aditya Birla Performing Arts Academy, Khelando remains a memorable example of Indian National Theatre pushing the possibilities of the stage.
