This building polices the entire Indian stock market today. But for its first few years, it didn’t even have an office to call its own.

This is the story of SEBI.

Back in 1988, the government wanted a proper board to keep Indian stock markets in check. So they set up SEBI. But in its earliest days, SEBI didn’t even get its own building. Its very first chairman, a man named S.A. Dave, ran the whole thing out of a borrowed desk inside IDBI’s office in Cuffe Parade. And it had barely any real power either. It could watch the market, but it couldn’t punish anyone for breaking the rules.

Then in 1992, the Harshad Mehta scam blew up and exposed just how badly the market needed a regulator with actual teeth. That’s when the government finally gave SEBI statutory power through the SEBI Act.

India’s stock market has always been tied to Dalal Street and the old Fort area in South Mumbai. But SEBI’s headquarters isn’t anywhere near there. It sits all the way in Bandra Kurla Complex, a newer business district built on what used to be reclaimed marshland.

So the regulator watching over Dalal Street doesn’t even sit on Dalal Street.

From a borrowed desk in someone else’s office to twin towers in Mumbai’s newest business district, SEBI’s whole story is proof that power on paper means nothing until a crisis forces someone to actually use it.

How much of India’s population is living in multidimensional poverty?

India’s multidimensional poverty rate fell from 24.85% in 2015-16 to 14.96% in 2019-21, according to NITI Aayog’s National Multidimensional Poverty Index.

But the state-wise picture remains very different.

In 2019-21, Bihar had the highest multidimensional poverty rate at 33.76%, followed by Jharkhand at 28.81% and Meghalaya at 27.79%. At the other end, Kerala recorded the lowest rate at 0.55%, followed by Goa at 0.84%.

NITI Aayog’s more recent estimates suggest that India’s multidimensional poverty rate fell further to 11.28% in 2022-23. However, these 2022-23 figures are extrapolated estimates based on the 2015-16 and 2019-21 data, rather than estimates from a new NFHS survey. NITI Aayog does provide state/UT-wise projected figures for 2022-23 as well.

So, this map uses the NFHS-5 (2019-21) state-wise figures, which remain the latest comparable survey-based state-level dataset.

How much does the average worker earn each month around the world? 💰

When adjusted for purchasing power, Switzerland tops the list at $8,551 per month, followed by Germany at $7,345 and the UK at $6,518.

India comes in at $1,040, while China stands at $2,908.

These figures are PPP-adjusted, which helps compare earning power across countries by accounting for differences in the cost of living.

Now, we have a vaccine for cancer.

Well, not exactly a vaccine for all cancers. Moderna and Merck have reported promising results from a personalised cancer vaccine for high-risk melanoma.

Here’s how it works.

Doctors analyse a patient’s tumour to identify its unique mutations, and the vaccine uses mRNA to train the immune system to recognise those specific cancer signals.

It was tested alongside Keytruda, an existing immunotherapy that helps the immune system fight cancer, in a Phase 3 trial involving 1,137 patients.

After five years, the combination reduced the risk of cancer recurrence or death by 49% compared with Keytruda alone.

The result sent Moderna’s stock up 177% in one session, adding around $44 billion to its market value.

Detailed results are still awaited, with potential availability as early as 2027.

The new CAS was used to manipulate the Sensex.

But before I tell you more, follow us if you haven’t already.

SEBI has alleged that Copthall Mauritius Investment placed ₹66 crore of buy orders across all 30 Sensex stocks in just two seconds, accounting for 99.9% of the buy-order value and pushing the indicative Sensex up 362 points.

Meanwhile, Mansi Share and Stock Broking allegedly placed ₹145 crore of sell orders across eight stocks, pulling the index down nearly 233 points, before cancelling most of them.

And it matters because under CAS, the official closing price is determined through a single auction, and that price is used for derivatives settlement and other market calculations.

SEBI is now examining the alleged trades and their impact on the closing price.
